California-Southern

Some cuteness overload that makes me smile. After losing two Breda juveniles and a sweet 6-yr-old Silkie this month, I hurriedly got 3 Dominique chicks from Wes's Pets & Feed in El Monte before "chick season" is over. Doms are very much like Breda in calmness, outgoing curiosity, unafraid, and people-friendly plus they are lightweight like the Breda.

These are the 3 itty-bitty baby Doms brought home Aug 4th:

These are the Dom girls now, running/flying around, growing juvenile barring, and taking dust baths in their grit dish!

Hello everyone, so this week is a scorcher here in So. Cal. I'm in Jurupa Valley. What are you guys doing to keep your chickens cool?
I set up a string of misters on the run. It has lowered the air temperature by almost 10 degrees. Plus, I have noticed a few of my chickens just stand and let the mist get on them.

Water bottles with frozen water are also a good way for them to stay cool! They will stand and lay against them to cool off.

Dang, this new BYC site I'm still trying to figure out. I missed weeks of updates from this thread! And the text editor is ACHINGLY slow. But I'm finally here!

Sly, great doms! I was really going to get one this week and have been thinking about you and your little. Glad to see the pictures!

Why was I looking got a Dominique this week? A friend set some sex link eggs from my birds the day my golden cuckoo marans was taken by an OWL :( only one hatched, a girl! But she needed a buddy (perfect timing for a Dominique!). One of the feed stores was getting an order in this past Friday from Privett. Perfect again! But because of the heat they cancelled the order. I ended up with a 2 week old barred rock buddy instead.

AND I'M HAND RAISING. I've got enough birds that are terrified of me and recently lost my namesake hen, Amelia, who was a snuggly barred rock :( so hand raising it is!

Cheers and keep cool :)

Tried inserting a photo but it's attaching a file instead. Sigh. Learning curve.

That is sad. What did your birds die of?

We'Re a little late to the party, but we finally set up misters for all the pens. The girls like the mud more the the cool mist. They get wet then roll in dry dirt to make their own mud. I wish we had done this sooner!!!!
Great idea!!! It has been so HOT!!! We have been getting thunderstorms up here so temps are finally off..but my girls HATE the thunder...poor babies!

YES @Amelia Egghart it took me a while to get used the to new BYC and it seems to run slow on whatever device I am on! Could be out internet is not that great up here in the mountains either..but didn't seem to be an issue before the site changed! Hang in there!!! It gets better!!!
