Thanks, froggiesheins!  It is nice to know that there are others out there.  My friends and neighbors all think we're a little crazy.  Could be...  :)

AHH YES, I get the same " thats the krazy chicken-lady" look too! hee hee

WE are the sane ones cuz they do not know what they are missing! ;)

I do know someone in Sherman Oaks that has chickens.

Can U legally keep hens by you or are you sneaking? I know you probably can't have roosters......AND most importantly, what do you have? Ya gotta post pictures and show off yer girls! :yesss:

From what I could find, Los Angeles county allows up to a certain number of hens (but you are right, no roosters!). I *hope* the girls are, well, girls. Maybe someone here can help. I have 2 buff orpington and 2 that I was told are araucana, but they seem more easter egg-y to me. What do you think?

I'm in Woodland Hills. I have 7 hens that are 16 weeks old. So, eggs soon (I hope!!!!). Good luck and yes the mild summer has been nice on my girls!

If it comes sexed its from a hatchery . if its from a hatchery its an ee. There are a lot of long explanations for that but that is the tldr answer!
My first 2 chickens are hatchery ee . they lay huge blue eggs and they are so funny!

And by the way there is not a limit on the number of hens in LA County nor the City of LA. The ordinance is based on the distance they are from your home and your neighbors, I believe it's 20 feet from your house and 40 feet from your neighbors'). And you are allowed 1 rooster. Although pesky neighbors can be a kiljoy, which is why we've kept our brood a secret. Anyways, all the dogs in our neighborhood are WAY more of a nuisance then my girls.

I hear ya on the dog problem. Our neighbor's dogs are vicious and loud. We are building the fence higher this weekend (they look over the fence and bark at my kids - can't even go out sometimes...it's a little scary!).

I'm glad to hear about the laws in LA! Once these girls slow down in a couple years, I was thinking it would be good to replenish our layers. Though I've read that merging newcomers with the original flock can be rough, so I'm not sure how to go about that. Guess we'll cross that bridge later! But that's what my husband wants to do later on, rather than maxing out the space we have now, he wants to reserve some of the perch for down the road.

It takes all my power to not go get just a couple more chicks. I think I'm addicted!
