I am in Central Orange County and am interested in the next meet-up in Norco.  My kiddies would love to see some fuzzy balls. Someone with info about this meet-up, please post.  Thanks so much.

Your wish is my command! :bow I am the instigator of the Norco meet-ups and I just put you on "THE LIST"...feel special that you made it on my master list of contacts for the 4th year of Norco meet-ups :yiipchick :weee :celebrate :cd :yesss: :love
I will be posting the official invite in March and I will be sending PM's to everyone on my list too.
Right now we are looking at either April 12th or the 19th for meet-up dates so you can keep those Saturdays clear...

Ok Ms. Instigator, am I on the list or should I just crash the party as I did last year? lol Do you know who is putting the Valley Crest meet together?

I do have started stock, including Cream Legbars, Easter Eggers and Olive Eggers that are right at POL or have been laying for a few weeks.

This forum as well as the meet up message board for the Los Angeles Urban Chicken Enthusiasts (LAUCE) will have lots of resources for chicks and started stock. As the spring hatch is well underway, you may be able to find just what you want, and then some =)

Besides the meet-up in March (?) there's also a poultry show in April in Ventura.  A meet-up is an informal gathering of people with a mutual interest, in this case, chickens!

I haven't seen much about the meet-up. The more my family has talked about it the more we think getting chicks at least old enough to sex is a good idea. We aren't quite ready to get any yet though. The chicken coop is creeping together. We also have to make sure its as predator proof as possible (I've seen four big raccoons in our driveway before).

Happy to officially announce....

Our next MEETUP will be held in three weeks on Sunday, March 2nd from 12noon till dark? At our little homestead in Valley Center. (Please pm me for address as this is a public forum).

Potluck lunch :) I will provide a table with cups/plates/utensils, etc. And lots of lemonade. Please bring enough for your family and a bit more

You are welcome to bring your chickens, arts, crafts, other wares to sell or trade. Bring money, there's always lots of cool stuff. My daughter will have a girl Scout cookie booth :)

Please bring your lawn chairs, pop ups, and other tail gating accessories:) I have a few picnic tables and seating for about 20. P.s. If you left your chairs at my house last year, I saved them for you!

It looks like there are several posts re: the meet-ups. Besides this forum, sometimes they are actually posted in on-line "meet-ups"; if you search for meetups.com you may find a variety of things to do including chicken meet-ups in your area and others.

Predators can really take the fun and progress out of the chicken adventure. Glad to know you are thinking about that early on. You may know that raccoons will stick their paws through the wire if it is not a small enough grid and grab anything within reach; it is not pretty.

My favorite tip to deter diggers from accessing the run/coop is to lay substantial wire on the ground inside the run, and then cover it back up with atleast 6 inches of dirt; those dust bathes can dig pretty deep too =) Securing the edge of the coop/run at the ground is also important. I'm sure you can find lots of good articles with ideas that suit your application.

With regards to differentiating pullets from cockerels, there are auto-sexing breeds and sex-linked cross-breeds that have a high degree of accuracy when the chicks are born. Or you can order from a hatchery or breeder that offers guaranteed sexing. Some breeds, such as blue laced red wyandottes, can take longer to be convincingly one sex or another, while other breeds show early.

Chicks are often kept in a different type of housing before they are moved out to the regular coop, and tend to have less exposure to health issues. Bio-security is an important consideration with started stock as you do not want to introduce problems into your existing flock or brand new coop. Have you considered whether you want vaccinated chicks?
