Hello everyone! Does anybody here keep chickens for "pets" and not specifically for eggs. While I love my chickens, I also need them to be laying. I bought some "laying hens" back in January, and one of them just doesn't lay. I bought another set about 2 months ago, and one of them isn't laying.

Yesterday I unexpectedly inherited 4 chicks, and I must make room for them.

One of them is what appears to be a Mottled Java, and I was told that the other is a Black Ameraucana. They are each only supposed to be about 2 years old.
I need a new home for my two non-layers. If anybody relatively close to Yucaipa, Ca is interested in some new "pet" chickens. (OR, wants them for their stew pot), please contact me.

Please post pictures of your ladies, it sure does help in rehoming them... :)

There is also an INLAND EMPIRE thread you could post this on.

It may be worth mentioning, that each of these birds came from large flocks, to my small flock. Maybe they just didn't care for the change?

What do y'all do about the Santa Anas? Do the winds bother the chickens? Do you provide extra cooling devices (mist, ice in the water, etc), or extra wind breaks?

Our chicks arrived during this last bout of Santa Anas, which was convenient because it kept the ambient temperature in the garage (where the brooder is) between 85 and 95 degrees, so we didn't really need a heat lamp at all.

I make sure my little hen has plenty of shade to stay cool. She also REALLY likes watermelon, so it is a cool treat for her. She does get freaked out when the Santa Ana's kick up, so we make sure her house isn't in direct line of the winds. I have just the one, so when the winds get really strong, I bring her in our patio area or our kitchen(she is VERY spoiled). As long as you have shady areas to retreat and plenty of water, they do ok even during santa ana wind season(which seems to be all the time this year!)

Can anyone tell me what kinda of chick they think this is...the people at the feed store didn't have a clue. I was looking for a pullet but this was the closest they had. They weren't sure if it was a female either. Poor thing looks kinda haggard...maybe he/she will be ok.

Chickie looks like it is about 6 weeks old and appears to have a "toppy" or a "crest"of some kind. The couple of curved tail feathers is suggestive of a roo but it is still a toss-up. Breed, haven't a clue! :)
