I want to add to my flock in October. Specifically, I'd like to add a Faverolles, an Ameraucana and maybe also an Appenzeller Spitzhauben, and perhaps also have a second small flock comprised of bantams, like Silkies and Polish. Via CL, I found a small farm in SD county that might have breeds I want. They don't have Faverolle chicks, but can offer a Faverolle x Legbar. Anyone familiar with that cross? What's the temperament of the cross like? Also, do y'all know of other local breeders who have those breeds you can recommend? Thanks!

I personally don't get mixed or mutt breeds and here's my reason - If, in an emergency, my flock needs to be found homes it's MUCH easier to find homes for purebreds than mutts - I re-homed 3 pure breeds this past year with no problem. A gal's DH in the Inland Empire was called into the service and she had to move out of state in less than a month and couldn't take her flock. She had no problem dispersing the birds because they were all pure breeds and she actually got some money for the rare ones.

Don't mess around with crosses unless you plan to serve them for dinner. Silkies and Polish get along well with each other because of their gentle natures and small sizes. Appenzeller Spitz are jittery active birds and wouldn't fit well with Faverolles and Ameraucanas who are gentle non-combative fowl. Spitz are beautiful birds but are highly active with unsettling temperaments. Amers and EEs are slow to mature and are wary, predator-savvy sentinels, kooky spooky alert birds but with very sweet and non-combative personalities - easily made into pets. The gentle Faverolles are very docile and not nearly as predator-savvy or quick to respond as the Amers and EEs. Cream Legbars are fairly calm but the really curious and human interracting breed are the Swedish Flower Hens. They will follow a human all around their pen where other breeds would be spooked. Icelandics are difficult to contain in areas you want them to stay. They are strong-willed and fly or squeeze into places you don't want them to go and almost impossible to train - completely opposite of Swedish Flower Hens.

Sounds like you want to go with gentle and non-combative breeds so the Spitz is iffy but your other choices are good. Standard heritage like RIR, BR, Wyan, Leghorns, Marans, NHR, Orps, Lorps, etc are large or assertive and will tend to eventually bully smaller or gentler-natured fowl. Hope this info helps.

I have a black Ameraucana that is near to laying.
(Also an ameraucana x legbar, some blue laced red Wyandotte pullets and some basque that are friendly).

I got my Cream Legbar and Olive Egger from here. Great people and lots to choose from. Just down the street from me.

just for the record, Phage usually has beautiful BLRW that are great with people and any other chickens. They seem especially attentive to people.
I have also found Basque hens to be a great addition to any mixed flock.

Well that might be true, but just try to get him to come to a meet up that's not in his front yard...lol

Are you only looking for pullets or can you consider roosters?
There is a lady in Torrance who has silkies she needs to rehome due to a change of circumstances.  It sounds like she has been very selective with her flock of hens and roosters.

If you check on the NorCal thread I think you can find all of those varieties/breeders.
I have Cream Legbars and Marans, and a variety of olive eggers including Ameraucana mixes if that is helpful.

I'm only looking for pullets. Don't want to disturb the neighbors. My BR is already pretty loud...she is very attention-seeking and will "ooonnnkkkk honk ooonk ooonnnnkk!!" as she follows us around the yard or whenever she sees us pass by a window or door.

Hmmm. I've never looked into Basque. Off to research! BLRW are so pretty....one of the breeds on my short list too

Woohoo! We got our first egg today! :weee I've been waiting eagerly for weeks as she exhibited all the signs: red comb & wattles, squatting and 2-finger-wide pelvic bones (though my fingers are a small). My BR, named Barred-Rock Obama, is about 20 weeks old and had been acting extra weird the last two days, searching for a nesting spot. She didn't go for the nest box in the coop, though she made a mess digging though it. Instead, she chose to lay in one of her favorite spots...under our persimmon tree. It's a wee egg, but it looks great and has a good shell.
