How many weeks did it take after the pelvic bones spread apart?
About 2 weeks ago, her pelvic bones widened to 2 finger widths. My dad taught me this, but his gauge is his finger widths, which are wider than mine.

Woohoo! We got our first egg today!I've been waiting eagerly for weeks as she exhibited all the signs: red comb & wattles, squatting and 2-finger-wide pelvic bones (though my fingers are a small). My BR, named Barred-Rock Obama, is about 20 weeks old and had been acting extra weird the last two days, searching for a nesting spot. She didn't go for the nest box in the coop, though she made a mess digging though it. Instead, she chose to lay in one of her favorite spots...under our persimmon tree. It's a wee egg, but it looks great and has a good shell.![]()

I'm so happy for you!!! It's a pretty color, too. That pic of them all inspecting it is adorable. Are you going to try to get her to lay in the nesting boxes?
Ours are almost 18 weeks, and none of them are showing the signs that Barred-Rock was showing for so long.
I agree. The hubs and I have bets going; I think it will be white rock, partridge rock, Easter egger, barred rock, welsummer (notoriously slow to mature). Thanks! I hope she lays in the nesting box today. If she doesn't, then we'll keep her locked up until she lays. I definitely don't want her finding her own spot since our backyard is large and there's also a chance that she'll lay on the slope. I definitely don't want to hike up the steep slope searching for eggs!
Your white rock looks like she'll be your first egg layer.
I'm in san Diego and one of my she's is a he. Let me know of any one looking for a super friendly lap loving rooster!
