California-Southern

Well I am in Redlands - about an hour from you. We are new at it too. We just started and we are finishing the coop this weekend. We have 6 chickens almost 8 weeks old, but we may be down to 4 as I think 2 of them are roosters. :( I'm kinda attached to one of the roosters, but not sure about the other. We are not allowed to have roosters where we live. :(

Bummer! I'm afraid we will get a rooster by mistake as well... We'll see.
One of ours turned out to be one... We couldn't keep him

Yeah - what's with the "no roos allowed" ordinances? I'd rather hear a rooster crowing occasionally in the daytime than hearing our neighbor's dog barking piercingly all night long!!!! or dragging his feed bowl all around his cement patio for hours at a time non-stop!!!! We can't enjoy open windows at night because of him. People complain about roosters to the point roos aren't allowed in ordinances but don't tell people anything derogatory about their mutts polluting the neighborhood!

Hi all!

I'm new around here and just checking in to see if there are people around me (OC, CA) who raise chickens.

My hubby and I are looking into getting chickens for our backyard.

Hello and welcome from NOC! Be forewarned, they are addictive. I started out with 4 backyard hens. Within 6 months, I conservatively (meaning I restrained myself) added 6 more, then some chicken math happened when I turned out to me a roo. Now I have 10 biggies, 3 teens and 6 littles and am expecting some tinies on July 5. 4 of the teens & littles are Roos, so more chicken math soon. ;)

East County Feed.... Martie the owner used to have a Belgian Mare... She has a degree from an Ag college and KNows her feeds. I used to chat with her about my Draft horse. Nice nice nice people.

I got my first chickens there ... EEs... about 20 years ago.

She set up a small leather shop right in the feed store office and does leather tooling too...

Hi there, are you selling any Polish chicks right now? I have raised birds all my life "parrots" but now I want something a little easier. The Polish are so cute and the frizzles but I really don't know much more about the different kinds. Is there a good book to get that shows the different types?

Hi, welcome to BYC!

As the Polish are a specific breed with several varieties, if you look around on BYC including the buy/sell/trade section you may find breeders, or you can look on-line for a Polish chicken breeders club, at facebook pages, hatcheries, etc. The American Poultry Association will have breed specific information. Author Gail Damerow has a range of excellent books including the Chicken Encyclopedia with a brief introduction to different breeds. My favorite picture books are The Extraordinary Chicken as well as the Extra Extraordinary Chicken, both of which feature Polish on the cover. btw - the males usually have the best crests, so keep that in mind…(there are also other crested breeds that are not Polish, with a variety of other traits).

Frizzle is a recessive feather condition, and you are more likely to find that in the cochin breed, but there are many breeds and backyard mixes that may offer a frizzle variety. One person in the Long Beach area comes to mind, and there are likely others.

Will you continue to have parrots as well as chickens?
