I had 3 in my backyard the other day at about 6 am. I saturated the back hill (no one behind us its kinda like wilderness undeveloped) anyways saurated it eith amonia then added moth balls and fixed some weak points like the border fence. So far *knock on wood* they havnt been back. They got for sure 5 chickens. Wounded a 6th. And a 7th died from injures i didnt know it had. I now have a talk radio station on 24/7 (works out cuz during part of the day its spanish. And then it switches to english depending on the signal) and have iur backtard lite up with flood lights that light up the backyard but dont bug the chickens. Ans i now go out and feed them about 5:30 to help keep them away. But coyotes will attack at any time bbut prefer dusk and dawn. I was screaming at it and it didnt care.

Do you have a very large guardian/flock breed dog -- or two? That would intimidate/deter the coyotes along the fenceline. Guardian breed's sheer size will intimidate a coyote in a stare-down. Hope you can get your predator issue resolved and so-o-o sorry you lost so many hens

I have 3 dogs. None get along with the chickens they tollerate them but one has killed a few as well. To be fair shes a bird hunting dog. Not our brightest idea to get chickens when we had a weimariner. And then our other is a mutt. Shes boxer, austrillian shephard, pitbull, border collie and who knows what else. And then a jack russel poodle. So far the other neasures have worked.

Yep your batting a thosand on that grouping..... LOL. Any kind of terrier or terrier bloodlines has a VERY strong prey drive. Thats why they were used for hunting rats and weasels.

Aussies are awesome dogs but they need clarification as to their job. Incredibly smart and people pleasers.. Poodles too. Poodles were bred as an all purpose dog originally... But you have to get a good blood line that hasnt had neurotic behavior bred in.... So sad when dog breeds get popular...

Livestock guardian dogs too have to pass muster before they are used in that capacity. Great Pyrenees are the most common in the US. But there are several others gaining popularity.... A livestock guardians sole job is to guard the flock no matter what it is... They are independant thinkers though so dont expect them to come every time you call..... But they will take on a bear or a mountain lion to protect their flock.

Me... Rottweilers are an awesome choioce.... they have that Quality of protecting their pack as well as being trainable and somewhat intimidating to the two footed varity of predator. IN my case this would be important. They too were bred originally to work livestock as well as pulling wagons....

So for all chicken owners new or old.... Know your dogs set them up for success. I would never leave a dog with the flock untended wihtout having a solid understanding that that dog knows his job is to leave them alone.

I have personal experience with dogs killing goats and chickens... Some cases it was neighbors dogs some cases it was my own. I dont blame the dog I blame my failure to protect my flock. and in the case the neighbors failure to keep her dogs in.

Its not so much that the weim killed the birds. She would fetch them and yeah the chikens didnt much appriciate her carrying them in her mouth and they would die of shock. Two did survive. Our mutt doesnt hurt them as much as chase them. And my jack russel poodle doesnt pay much attention to them when they are around.
