OC used to be a rural county decades ago and still has pockets of livestock but everything is getting edged out w/ new suburban communities... My cottage is only zoned for 5 hens/no roos.

I grew up with strawberry fields and a working dairy across the street from my school in northwest OC. All the fields are now commercial buildings and the dairy became a huge housing tract.
A few houses up the street from me were bought and turned into condos...these houses were on 3/4 acre lots! The next street over has a preschool with a mini farm, right smack in the middle of an older housing area, with a couple of horses, goats, chickens, and ducks. At least some things remain the same.
I'm very lucky to have a 1/4 acre lot, but I am limited to 5 hens also.

I'm not sure I agree. I"m in Ventura County. Bakerfield is less than 2 hours north of me. I consider SLO as Central, not Bakersfield.

It is true that this thread is SUPER slow. I've met people, more local to me, on Facebook pages. I try to get them to come here, but it's too quiet.

Is anyone hatching anything right now? I have a dozen eggs of my own eggs under my broody silkies. I went a little nuts on Ebay and I am hatching 63 of those eggs in one of my incubators, and I won several BYC auctions, and I have those in another incubator. I just won ANOTHER auction on BYC, so I"ll set those next weekend. I am going to be hatching a dozen eggs for a local friend, and they should be here tomorrow or Wed.

I also have about 40 chicks in my bathroom, that I will hopefully move outside today.

Spring is always busier!!

Getting my bators up and running to hatch in a couple of weeks!!!

Only 80? We've had 90 degrees plus yesterday and today in the San Gabriel Valley. I feel like we're living in freakin' Las Vegas or AZ! I lost two fabulous hens to heat-related compromise last year so I'm getting nervous the summer is coming way too early again like last year! I've switched from flowers to cactus and succulents for the yard.

We are at 70 here in the mountains...LOL! Back down to 60's next week....NOT missing the heat we used to have down there in OC at all! So hard on hens for sure! So sorry for your loss

It's funny -- I was working on the front yard when I heard a couple ladies calling to me. I don't speak Spanish but could see by their excitement and pointing that they were utterly enthralled with the little Silkie chicken at my feet busily scratching up the dirt looking for bugs! Can't figure why so many cities don't allow chickens when general passers-by on the street get so excited over a little chicken having fun in a front yard! Guess it all depends on your neighbors how well chickens get received. (Of course, cute little Silkie chickens always seem to exude smiles and attention!)

I think the problem is people like me who have 20 roosters and free range hens scratching up the neighbor's planter box...

Hoarding chickens can be a problem too, where smell gets bad. I dont have that problem because my yard is "big" (1/2 acre) and I clean often.

Cities are changing though, it seems. I know of a few that now allow 5 or so hens... but no roosters.

Hello Everyone! This is my first post....I think. Lol. I've been following several threada, always meaning to post, but don't think I ever got around to it. We will be turning a shed into a coop amd plan to have 6 hens and 1 rooster. We live in a rural area in Yucaipa. Do you know where I can find some chicken breeders out here? I'm willing to travel up to 45ish miles. We went to tractor supply store, but they don't carry the breeds I want in the store. I am looking for chicks of the following breeds Easter Egger, New Hampshire Red, Silver/Gold laced Wyandotte, Barred Rock, Buff Orpington. I know I can order online from hatcheries, but the shipping is ridiculous! Any help is greatly appreciated.
