Hi to all my So Cal neighbors! I'm new to chickens and have 6, six week old chicks that we just moved to the coup this weekend. I'm curious what you all are planting for your hens to graze on in/near the run? I'm planning on planting some squash around the edge of the run so they can stick their head through and nibble. Any other ideas what grows well in your yards?

Hey everyone! Any suggestions/recommendations on the best crow deterrents? Those pesky, black birds have taken to stealing all of my chicken's feed as well as stealing all my darn eggs!

Thanks in advance :)

Hi everyone, hope you are well! If anyone is looking for Mandarin Ducks, I saw two drakes for sale at Farmer's Feed in Gilroy.

Crows haven't been a problem here yet. I keep the feed in the run and under a bush. Crows can't get to it from overhead. As long as something is over the top of it/limits their escape they should stay away.

Squash leaves are good, they LOVED tomatillos. Both grew around the outside of the run. Chard has been a hit with the little ones and then they graduate to kale for whatever reason. No one liked collards, unfortunately. Have fun!

My guys really like parsley, cilantro, French marigolds, and lemon grass. They seem to like mint, passion vine, Mexican marigolds, and celery tops. I've read chickens like the following, but mine are not usually interested in nasturtium flowers or leaves, hibiscus flowers of leaves, lavender, salvia, thyme, day lilies flowers and leaves.

Does anyone feed mealworm beetles? Two of my Easter Eggers won't touch them while the other three love them.

I have too many chickens that fly over the fencing to wander the yard. They destroy anything that I try to grow near their run. With the water restrictions we've had it became too expensive to even keep my garden going. I'm going to try a small garden this year. But that is past another fence that the chickens don't go near.

They are pesky... I used have a friend crow that I raised and he would undo everything I did.

He was scared of anything new that was randomly moving, like xmas lights, shade sails, wind chimes.

I used to breed meals worms... until I left open 3 worm totes.. and a dozen chickens ate every beetle and larva in there. 1000s
