Adopted two Red Star hens from a fellow gardener in my local Community Garden. Had been toying with starting and this opportunity presented itself. Lakewood is the model of suburbia. Previous experience with hens was on grandparents farm when I was a child about a thousand years ago.

Does anybody know why my rooster is doing his little dance around a chick?

How fun! I used to live in Orange county and started keeping bantam Cochins there. Just a pair like you...we moved up to the mountains with plenty of room and guess what? We still have just a pair.. LOL! We haven't had time to lay a foundation for a large coop secure from predators...so our cute little duo it is! They are so much fun! We love them both

I have 5 sultan silkies I think, a productin red, and a Ameraucana chick.

Once I figure out this site I'll post pics. I'm amazed at how everything just fell into place with these girls and how their personalities evolved. So if you indulge me, I'll expand my story a little. The gardener who gifted me these girls knew I had an interest in backyard hens. Her father originally had the ladies but he had passed suddenly. She offered them up as she didn't have space. So I set about building a wall and gate to make an enclosure off the corner of my house. Told a friend that seems to specialize in finding great deals at yard sales, etc. Within a day, they had found a backyard, two level coop for cheep, pun intended, out in San Bernardino in fact. Moved it in place, treated my friends to breakfast, then loaded a dog carrier into the truck and it was off to rescue the damsels in distress.

Hi everyone! I'm a long-time chicken person but I recently moved down here from NorCal! I currently live in Pasadena and my flock consists of three pretty Andalusian ladies (one true blue, two splash). I'm looking to expand my flock with more hens/pullets who are good with the heat!
