California-Southern

Hi everyone! I'm a long-time chicken person but I recently moved down here from NorCal! I currently live in Pasadena and my flock consists of three pretty Andalusian ladies (one true blue, two splash). I'm looking to expand my flock with more hens/pullets who are good with the heat!

Welcome! Stay away from bearded beauties unless someone is home during the hot part of the day or you have a super cool shady place. I have to rescue my faverolle and easter egger from the heat all...The...time :( they're cute but they're not good at cooling themselves.

Good to know!!
I moved down here originally with some buff orpingtons (the sweetest, most docile breed in my book) who did not survive the first Pasadena summer. Oddly enough they did just fine in Davis earlier that summer - where temps got up to 108* on some days.

My very first chicks were white crested black polish (from Half Moon Bay Feed & Fuel, no less) and ever since my run-ins with mites on their crests I've never been a huge fan of breeds with lots of extra feathers on their head/face/legs. But now I know to look out for them in the heat too!

New to BYC and to chickens. Live in the hills in Topanga (between Malibu and Woodland Hills). My son and I just built a coop and we got 5 pullets 2 weeks ago - RIR, Black Austrolorp, Buff Orpington, Plymouth Rock, and an Easter Egger. A week and a half earlier my son and I found a Silver Leghorn on the side of the road. Caught it (since loose chickens = coyote dinner up here), posted some flyers but no answers so we have 6 chickens in all.

I did put a mister out during the heat spell last few days (temps over 100) and the girls were all panting and holding their wings out. The easter egger was the one who was wet all the time....seems she knows how to handle the heat. Once the mister was in the girls stayed nice and cool once they figured it out.

I have roo's separated from my flock (I can't have roosters, so they stay indoors). Every time I add a newly crowing rooster to that pen, at least one of the established roosters (all still very young) do a dance around the new roo. They will also mount the newcomer as well. They don't care that it's also a boy. I've seen videos of rooster dancing around toddlers (and the parents thought it was cute). I think it could be a dominating thing?

Yup. Just showing the kids who's boss.

Could be a hormone crazed confused young rooster, too. If that's the case, definitely separate them.

Hi, everyone I'm new to byc and new to chickens. I have a silkie roo and my pullets are silkie, mottled java, cuckoo maran, ameraucana, and a cream legbar. I really want to expand my flock. I've been looking for more dark egg layers with no luck, also looking for olive eggers with no luck

Welcome! Where in SOCAL are you located? My only luck with dark egg layers has been hatching eggs. I can't keep roosters, so I only keep the hens. I think I have a couple of Olive egger roos, but already sold the hen I hatched.

I live in north San Diego County, so right by inland empire as well. My in-laws are in the OC so I'm there pretty often. Where are you located? Is he a first generation OE?
