I am on the nextdoor app and there were a couple threads about chickens in it. Some of the people live near me that replied and they were starting bashing the poor girl who posted.... I can tell you it wasn't nice and then became a political talk about why farm animals are in the suburbs and how it should be outlawed. It became very daunting to know people near me just bash chickens and honestly was scared to reply and defend chickens.

Oh man! You can't bother with what Nextdoor people say! You know it's the vocal and the cranky who rave on there, right?

I've lived in my neighborhood for 15 years and I've always thought it was a lovely congenial place to be. ...until I signed on to Nextdoor and then it seemed like we were a hotbed of alt-Right Trump supporters and arms-toting self-appointed George Zimmerman-style vigilantes. All the decent people stopped posting and one lovely woman who began to fear for her mixed race college student son actually moved to Moorpark before he came home for Thanksgiving and was accused of being an unfamiliar Black man stalking the neighborhood.

Wow that is horrible!!

I know. I don't post on Nextdoor. I just check in case I need know something important. I got reprimanded for posting a question someone else already had but because my setting were set for my area I didn't see the post from another area. Live and learn.

Hope everyone's chickens are doing good in this windy weather and sudden temperature drop!

I don't have her price list but I ordered the following 40 lb bags.
1 - layer with corn
1 - 3 grain scratch
1 - scratch with corn and
4 - Naturally Free Layer

My total was 168.50 Average 24.08 per bag

Each feed is a different price. I trust the lady that is ordering. I know the stuff with corn is cheaper than the stuff without.

My last order was
1 NF Grower
2 Layer w/corn
1 3grain scratch
6 NF Layer
1 Scratch with corn
My total was 270.50 - since I got more of the Naturally Free stuff, it averages 24.59 per bag.

Again, this is for the 40lb bags.

Shout out to northeast Los Angeles chicken fam! Where’s my peeps at? I’m new to this forum and looking to rescue two hens to keep my one gamehen company. My hubs and I are both plant-based so be assured the chickens will never become dinner (not judging if that’s your thing, it’s just something we personally won’t do!) We might start eating eggs if we ever get any, I think our rescue hen is too young to lay or it’s just because of the short daylight hours? She’s well-fed and has a 8x4x6 run and a 3x4 coop, but any advice is appreciated on raising gamefowl since most I have read is only about laying breeds.

Hello Brooke!!

:welcome

I would look at the animal shelters (check multiple areas) if you are trying to rescue. Some shelters tend to have more chickens than others. I looked for months around me but all they had were roosters and I wasn't looking for a rooster.

Your hen is beautiful!!!

I agree, the shelters are a good place. I know the Camarillo shelter has a bunch right now because of the Thomas fire.

Thank you for the response- we’ve only found roosters at shelters so far but will keep looking :)

I want to say I saw this discussed at some point, but do you all have suggestions of where to get an incubator serviced locally? I was given a cabinet one and have never attempted to turn it on. It was outside for a number of years under a tarp and I would love to have it looked at and see if it runs properly. I know I should play without myself for a bit and see if it heats up and check temps, just don't feel super confident fiddling with it.
