Yes O.C. CHickens- growing up in Orange county in the 50s and 60s was great! Costa Mesa was called "goat hill" and my Dad owned his own buisness on the corner of Lido Island and Newport Blvd- just down the road from his "little ranch". We were close enough to the beach to enjoy it - but far enough away to have "breathing room".
I saw someone else on this thread that lives in Costa Mesa- I'll have to look that back up - curious where they are and if chickens are still allowed or if they are outlaws.

I grew up in SLO Co. from the time I was a kid and am still here -- at least till our daughter and I can convince my husband that we need a bigger place in OR. So . . . I think we'll be here a while.

We're new to chickens and have a mixed flock of five pullets (I dearly hope they're all pullets!). They're eight weeks old now and we're having so much fun with them.

I believe that I am allowed to have my chicken pets in the yard as long as I keep the flies down, don't have roosters and keep them a certain distance from the houses (I need to move the pen, but so far I think that's the only issue I have), and I have to limit the number of combined fowl and rabbits to 25 I think (or was it 50?). I remember carefully looking up the rules for City of San Diego and learning that I was ok. I also looked up my HOA rules and saw no conflicting information.

I treat them as pets with benefits and keep good relations with the neighbor closest to their pen.

And yes they are much quieter than my dog or any of the neighborhood dogs.

I don't have that big of a yard but I only have 2 chickens so I think I'm ok. I'd love to have a lot more, but I'm starting with the 2 full sized chickens. I had bantams last year but they were so 'chatty' and I thought I was going to annoy my neighbors, it seemed like the girls were crowing too...

We're in Azusa. Our flock consists currently of 4 RIR and 3 BR's. They're 19 weeks old and we're patiently waiting for eggs. Would love to add a couple of easter eggers, but our flock's just so awesome I'd hate to upset the balance................

Hello Southern California!

I an new here - and new to chicken "ranching".
I'm trying to set up my first backyard coop of a few chickens.

I am looking for some RIR started pullets - or preferably POL.
I would like to buy from someone in Southern California.
Do any of you have? Or do you know who might?

Perhaps some other really good egg layer would work for me also.
I just don't know very much about other breeds.

Welcome Carlyle! If you are looking for started pullets: "Carter's Hay and Feed" on Rancho Santa Fe Rd in Olivenhain have laying pullets- I think they are rhode island reds. You can also buy baby chicks from "MyPetChicken.com" and specify just girls if you are in a neighborhood where you cannot have roosters. I bought 6 day old baby chicks from them- two wyandottes and 4 easter eggers all who are laying now. We have a catawba- type ark with a run attached and they free-range around the yard during the day- I lock them in at night for their safety.

Hello again Carlyle- In answer to your question if I have a photo of my run- I don't. This is the closest I have. I live on a very small city lot so this is what I have done for now. You can see the ark to the side, I put straw down under the ark and throughout the whole area from fence to ark and made a chicken wire "walk through" gate for me to go through. There is also a bird net top on it since one of the girls decided one day to fly up on the fence- but it's tall enough for me to walk under so I can clean the ark- collect eggs- bring them treats- etc. The inside of the ark is pine shavings that gets put into the compost pile and the straw all gets raked into another compost pile that is just straw and coffee- no food. There are no smells or flies. The whole run is about 25 feet long by 10 feet wide and the ark is inside of that.

Hi, Carlyle! I'm not sure where you are, but having searched around a lot myself, I can tell you it's pretty difficult to find good chickens around my area. I'm in the San Gabriel Valley (Los Angeles County), probably not in a city anyone's heard of.

About ten minutes away from the L.A. Arboretum. A lot of the feed stores don't have them until Spring, usually the end of March. You might want to post in the "Wanted to Buy " section of the forum to see if anyone around you is selling. Good luck!
