I'm up north from you but I do get close on occasion to Buellton and Solvang. What kinds of chickens do you have or want?

I am fairly new here and keep checking for southern CA postings, but seems southern CA isn't that active, or else everyone is posting elsewhere that I haven't discovered

I live in the SFV, North Hills, and have four chicks around 8-9 weeks old out in the coop, and bought two EEs that are just a little over a week old. The latter are in the laundry room until they get big enough to be outside. I have been looking for marans (pullets), but now realize that I should wait until after winter is over because I don't want to house full grown chickens in the house, LOL! The coop is secure, but I assume it could get cold and if the chicks haven't acclimated before the cold weather sets in, it might be hard on them. Does this make sense to anyone, and what does everyone else do when your chicks are still small around winter? Thanks.

Yup you are correct in saying that you need to keep little chicks inside in the brooder until they have feathers and a secure place to peck around. And it becomes very dusty where ever they are housed. I am already over my limit so maybe I can restrain myself this year. Once you catch the "chicken" disease it becomes difficult to limit. There is something irresistible about little chicks. Hope that you don't get the "chicken" disease.

Foremost Insurance just sent us a message via email saying our homeowner insurance policy will be cancelled in 5 days unless we get rid of the chickens and chicken coop. (brand new and professionally made I might add.) I'm furious.

What reason could they have possibly given for such a ludicrous demand??? Are they afraid they will attack the mailman, mame the paper boy or ????????? Vista is rural so I don't get it.
Are you going to try to switch to another insurance company? Keep us posted.

I thought I heard everything ! that is ludicrous ! Just incredibly stupid. What company do you use ? All over the country people keep chickens in their yards. There is a guy on BYC who lives in downtown Philadelphia and has a flock in the lot next to his house. Tons of people have dogs and cats in their yards. Their are animals all over the place. We are in more danger from the global food industry than from a few chickens. How about the massive feed lots that the FDA is responsible for controlling and keeping our food safe. I am outraged as you probably can tell. I hate the insurance industry. First of all they control our health care industry and now they are telling us what to do in our backyards. This is crazy. Sounds likes too much control to me.

I was so alarmed that I did not see that your post does include the name of the insurance company. But how did they know that you have chickens ? Do insurance companies ask about pets and the like ? I don't remember answering questions like that just age of roof and gas hook-up and other significant stuff.

Please do let us know about this issue and what you are able to do about it.
