California-Southern

Nevermind rides and stuff! I am going to the meetup in Palmdale! And anyway, my mum wasn't going to say yes to that. But I shall see you all July 14th, 2012 in Palmdale. I think it would be great if someone like froggiesheins could send out a PM to all the S. Cali people with the details and stuff.

Hi I live in Camarillo and am just getting into the chicken game. I am trying to learn as much as I can about them before jumping in. My husband is not too keen on the chickens thing but I am determined! I am happy about learning from the wonderful people who live here in So Califonria.

This is the place to start and learn all you can. Having chickens has been the best thing my family has ever done... we fight for our rights to have them and actually are hoping to change the laws in Long Beach where we currently live. Things are looking pretty good, but who knows.

Very excited for you to see more, learn more, and get started. Very fun stuff..... welcome!

Thanks! I am wondering how much work & time is required in cleaning up the coop and what does it entail? For instance how much time does it take you to clean the poop and what do you use to clean it with? How often do you clean it? Do you put down pine shavings each time or every day, once a week?

Many thanks,

Sue

A few helpful hints for you that work well for me.....SAND in the coop / poop board under the roost pole/ sand in the run. It is worth every penny you spend on that sand....My run is 40ft X 5ft with 3 dividers.[3 roos] I clean EVERYDAY with a kitty litter scoop....makes life SO much easier...In the coops I use a metal [screen type] kitchen strainer to sift thru the poops. I put heavy vynil on the poop board to make life easier too. You can also wash and reuse the sand, so there is very little waste. Sand creates less dust and dries faster AND provides much needed grit for the birdies..win/win stuff! :yesss:
Building your coop off the ground is a nice back saver as well.....Hope I was helpful.....:fl.
Here are a few pics for you to see what I am talking about.....

"California Poultry People" Southern California Summer Meet Up

I wanted to get the word out that our group on FB (hopefully I am allowed to mention that here
hu.gif
) has planned our summer meet up. It is being held at a private residence so I will not be posting the address here. Please PM me if you are interested or find our group on FB and ask to join.

Date- Saturday July 14th
Time- 9am- 12(?)pm
Place- Palmdale, California (PM me for details)

We are planning a potluck/bring your own food, social get together as well as a poultry swap. You are more than welcome to bring poultry or other items to sell. If you plan to buy come prepared and bring a box/boxes. HOWEVER we ask that no sick birds, or birds who have recovered from any chronic or contagious illnesses (even if currently showing no signs of illness) be brought to this meet up out of courtesy to the home/poultry owner hosting the event. If your birds are known carriers, please leave them home. We have a list started on the FB group of birds being offered for sale, but feel free to start a list here if you like. Feel free to bring a table or chairs to set up your own area. We will be holding this event in the front yard only. The person hosting has been very gracious in letting us use her home and I do not want to over step.

Feel free to contact me for any further information you need. I hope to see a few of you there!
