CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

I've been looking on Craiglist for the cargo containers ever since Kim posted that coop made from one. I finally saw some on there today....$200 each! Looks like they have a bunch of them so I'll watch to see if they come down....I think I could buy the lumber for that.

What size are they? That's a great price depending on size and condition.

$200??? Can't be what I think they are. I've seen them for anywhere from $1500 to $3000.

I got a knock on my door a little while ago, from my neighbor. He found a lady with a Davis flock. She had eggs she needs hatched and turned out they're BLUE! So instead of starting to charge for hatching (income stops in May, so have to get creative) we're splitting whatever hatches. And she was apologizing about them not being FBCMs and here I was trying to get blues. Worked out great except now I have to pay my electric bill myself. LOL

they're like the one coop you posted that they guy made out of a shipping container.

They're wooden, not the 20' metal and I think only 5x7x7, but looks just like that cool coop was started from.

Blue copper marans? You must post pics when they hatch :D You could still sell the chicks. If I had land I would buy some lol. A cargo coop would be awesome and would probably encourage me to get 100 birds. Sigh. That is so dreamy!! Of course you'd have to cut some windows.

OH OK!!

The containers I want to look into are the ones they use to build HUMAN houses with. They're awesome!

The shipping container coops are awesome too and the one I put the link on here of, is just amazing. They did such a great job and I'm in love with the roof.

Depends on what I hatch out as too how many I'll keep of the blues. I have had such bad luck with getting rid of all the extra roos and then losing the one or two I keep. Or I just hatch out roos. Very frustrating. I had a couple of pullets this past summer and can't remember what happened to them, but lost them. Then you add my sick neighbor kids killing birds and I'm pretty sure that they have been the reason I've had so many disappear. Turns my stomach to even think about it.

I have another dozen blue Marans eggs coming in the mail. Sure would be nice to get a shipment that isn't tortured along the way. I swear I've never had so many bad shipments of anything, like I've had here. Oh wait. Back when I was with Avon, they did use UPS for a while and I was losing customers over all the damaged items I had to reorder. They'd even leave the stuff near the sidewalk or in the driveway in the rain. Here, it's USPS playing soccor with the boxes or checking to see if the package can withstand being run over with a forklift.

Thise would so work though! Just the fact that you don't have to put the wood together is a savings and maybe you could talk them down a bit. I think the one that was build by the other BYCer was $150. If I remember right it was like 6x8x8. Then again it wasn't our nice hige California prices either. Kills me. Like seeing the prices of feed in other states and thinking how great it would be to be able to afford my birds a little easier.

The ones you sent the link to CL seem like they would make a great chicken coop. I would have to do some figuring to see if you could even make them yourself any cheaper. I guess much would depend on the grade of plywood & such. I have 2 big metal Cargo hulls that we use for storage. I looked at the Cargo house site & was amazed at what some people have done with them. Ilove repurposing materials. The new 3 tier nestbox my son & I just finished has alot of recycled fence boards in it & leftover corrogated roofing too. Craigslist has been a great resource for me.

It would be for me too, if I had my van running. Really a pain to not be able to take advantage of all the things I see in there.

Trying to figure out if I'm still going to make the show. My black cloud is working overtime this week. I was thinking I'd stay somewhere close to the show, but then I thought about that too and it doesn't make since if I'm this close. Was going to do the banquet and changed my mind early on, but now I kind of wish I had signed up for it, but not enough to try to do anything about it. LOL Since Makayla is such a picky eater and I'm good with just someplace out that wat to eat, I think we're good.

Car's in the shop again. I swear that thing better run like brand new soon. Better even! I just waited to long to get things done, but since my income will be cut in half in May, I wanted to get it done. May still have to park it and turn it into a flower pot. It'll be all nice and running right and then I won't be able to buy gas. One thing after another.

I find that I am in no way a carpenter. I was racking through the one raised bed I have up and although I knew I was pushing it with warped boards, I kind of though it would hold up. Nope. Big gap. I'll have to add a board to connect the other 2 together. The little cabinet coop I got from the neighbors so long ago, keeps falling apart whenever I try to add anything. I'm absolutely useless. And to think I want more land, what the heck would I do with it other than fill it with chickens? Really frustrating when I've landscaped every single house I ever lived in and I just can't get things to work out here. I want to leave it better than I got it and right now it isn't even as good as it was.

I've definately lost my touch for so much lately.

Sometimes I think we try to do too much, too many different things, & evrything gets short changed. Plus we feel bad about it. I know I have a bad problem about wanting to "DO it all" & yet can't manage it. Don't beat yourself up Kim........... I am working on trying to learn to just do what I can no matter what that may be. Without all the help I get i wouldn't get much done at all. Today is Ceres garden club meeting & we are building birdhouses from the kits I cut. My husband came to my rescue & cut & drilled the metal rooftops for me. I hope it goes smoothly. The last time I did this for another group the little ladies had such a blast. They were all sooooooooooo pround of what they did!!!!!
