CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

I do know that Karen is a sweetheart and I just love her and she's always willing to talk to people about her birds.

NOW! Did anyone notice my post about my new Lionhead doe? :(  I feel so neglected! :lau   She's laying here on the floor next to my feet. With all the blown coats and plucking for nests, this is the only one I have that still looks like a Lionhead. LOL   Gonna check the next fair and see if I can find one or two more does and I should be good. Yeah right.

I second that about Karen! She has been a wealth of information and support in the short time I have known her.

Sorry Kim, did see that about your new baby digging her nails into your leg :D , but I was dealing with two cats in MY lap trying to push the laptop onto the floor! That will be neat if you can find her some hairy friends.

Quote: If you are going to hatch a small number, you can get the Brinsea mini. I think it hatches 8 eggs and does a good job. You can get a little giant for about $40.00 from places like TSC if you have one there. Those seem harder to use. I have two Genesis 1588 incubators and each can hold 42 eggs with the turner if you don't stack them. There were some people during the Easter Hatch that had something like 80 in there's stacked like a tetris game...

It's a good idea to practice with cheap eggs you don't care about. If you are home a lot and have some time, you might be able to hatch and sell Breeder quality BAs up there. Can you keep roos where you are?

Hatching is amazing and addictive

Bye,

Interesting thoughts Ron. lol That certainly would be a fun hobby I would imagine. It would be good to decide what level I wanted to take this hobby early on so that the incubator was the right one from the get go. We have many chickens and roos in our neighborhood so it isn't a problem with the folks around here. Our biggest problem is the eagles and raccoons. Which reminds me to go check my girls... letting them have a couple hours of free ranging.

Cya,

As far as hatching, I think I need to pull out the bators my husband and I made. My youngest daughter mentioned a while back that I always had perfect hatches with them. Might have to see about that. And even a homemade incubator will work. They are very cheap to make depending on what you want and need. If I can remember I'll call Karen tomorrow if she doesn't post on her own and we can see what can be done to get you some Aussies.

I didn't post a pick of the new doe, cause wellllll, I had always left pics to my husband to do. He'd always run in and say "let me do that for you." These days I'm a little ignorant when it comes to these things and I have so many pics on my phone that I don't have enough memory to send them to myself. I know, what a dork. Did I mention that my last colleg I attended I majored in Computer Science? I did learn how to turn one on.

I have lots of gentlmen callers for my little doe. I'm short on does is all. Doesn't mean I turn down a nice buck though. I can't wait till the weather gets cooler so I can breed more babies. Still don't know what my REW is, but keeping it no matter what.

I do still have my Bruce Sherman trio but I have been thinking of selling them. I have a breeder friend that has the same line & wants them. I am sure you can get eggs or maybe even chicks alittle later from her. She is Carrie Stroble from Harmony Ranch up in Arnold. She got her's from Bruce too. She is coming down to my house on Monday July 2nd along with Denny coming up from Paso Robles & MrsMoonCat coming from Madera. We are sharing a new big order of feed & are going to a Chinese lunch.... Denny has birds to take to the auction. I am selling my Mttled Javas & my Black Minorcas too. I am trying to get down to a select dozen breed/varieties & there are just too many to choose from. I am getting the Dorkings i want i the fall & need to empty pens for the ones I really really really want......LOL. I didn't go back to see who Kim is looking for BA for. I have some eggs I can try throwing in the incubator. I have a hatch due tomorrow & a Splash AM has already hatched from it. I have 2 Delawares pipping & a dark egg in the back that I can't see the writing on but it may be BigBoy my BCM. I have quite an assortment in this tray......LOL

That is very interesting what you shared about your husband making your homemade incubator and how it was very efficient. My husband is VERY handy. He actually built our very nice chicken tractor a couple years ago for my BR's. I told him what you said so right now he is looking into making one... so we will see where that takes us. lol We love projects!

I feel your loss as I know how wonderful it is to have a helpful hubby. It would be a very difficult transition for me in life without him. I enjoy hearing about your hubby and hope you continue to share your memories with him. Very precious indeed.

That's OK, I googled lionhead doe and saw some adorable pics of black rabbits with the lion type mane. I am in love.

Actually we have two black Pomeranians that have a similar look. They are very precious and so funny. We spoil them rotten and love every minute of it. They give back so much love we call them 'our girls'.

Not sure I know what a REW is but can figure it out eventually I know .... unless you would care to share the meaning.

I did read sewandgrows post too so I know she is selling her BA's to another gal, etc. Things are always evolving in life. Makes it interesting.

It's a term used in show rabbits. REW (red eyed white), BEW (blue eyed white).

Every hobby has it's own terminology!

Deb
Thanks Deb. Good to learn... even though I do not have rabbits. I like to understand everything as much as possible.

Deb thank you for explaining for Dee. I'm going to look for a half decent camera and try to get more pics of things. I need some of all the rabbits and as many of the birds as I can get. Plus I haven't taken pics of Isis or Dusty in a long time. I think Isis feels left out in pics the last 2 years.

I was trying to post a pic of a Duckmato on here and can't copy the darn thing. Frustrating!

Karen can you put Dee in contact with Carrie so she can get some eggs for decent chicks? She's in Washington, so eggs are probably the best way to go unless you hatch some out and can ship.

Kim,

My son was huge into rabbits when he was in 4-H. We went to youth/open shows nearly every weekend through the entire show season each year. His herd ran around 250 rabbits most of the time (about 50# of feed per day). Including we traveled to the ARBA national convention each year. He showed several different breeds (Eng Lop, Giant Angora, Checker Giants, Californians, etc), but he was mostly known for his Tans (the judges used to refer to him as Tan Boy). His secondary breed were Brittania Petites. If you go back to the National Convention in Tulsa, OK in the early 90's (I think 92), he won Best in Show with a Tan. It was the first time a Tan had ever won the convention. It was pretty exciting.

I'm still friends with quite a few rabbit judges.

Deb
