Quote: I know I can't have it both ways, but I HATE to see a broody hen, but I LOVE to see a broody with her chicks.

This summer I've had as many as four broody at once, seriously cuts into the egg production. At the moment, I only have one BO. She's been seriously at it for the last couple of weeks. I have another serama that keeps trying. She hatched chicks earlier this year and now is trying to sit again.

I lost track of broodies this summer. I had way too many. I had 4 of my FBCMs go broodie and no chicks hatched. I guess these chicks will carry the blue, but at least I have some more Marans chicks around now.

OK I have a trio of bantam Lavender AMs that I've finally decided I am really going to let go of. Thing is, my trio is 2 roos and a hen. They are nice birds and I think they are Shaffer lines. I'm going to be getting a few more chocolates to work with towards LF and I just need to make space. So if someone is interested send me a pm. Like I said they are nice birds and I'm letting them go very cheap. Trying to figure out what else I'm giving up. This is sooooooo hard for me!

Yeah I may have to stock up before next year. LOL From now on I'm going to seal them before I ever wear them.

I thought I saw a dead hen this morning and when I got close, these little guys took off in different directions. LOL No dead hen, just Fat Chick and her 10 chick brood.

Awwww!!! How sweet! I don't have any broodies. I think that's the way to go. No hatching and rearing them yourselves, just let mama do the work.

Wow I heard Seramas are rarely broody. That is great cause serama eggs are hard to hatch. Well according to a friend of mine that raises them anyway. I've never had seramas myself.

Ugh. That would be tough for me too. I have so many right now but I just keep building more coops instead of thinning them out.

I had three of them broody at once. They all sat together in a dog pan and you never knew who actually had the eggs under them. When the chicks hatched, they fought over them, so I gave them all to the one that first started, then I gave the other two each a chick out of my incubator. The one that's trying to brood right now, is the first hen. She is very determined.

I agree with you, Dawn. One of my long range goals is to have enough broody hens that I won't need to ask people (Ron) to incubate eggs for me. I think I'm the only person on BYC with no desire to own or use an incubator.

That's what hens are for!

I'm feeling horribly guilty. I asked a neighboring organic chicken farmer to take my culls, along with their birds, to the processor this morning. It's a 3 hour round trip, with heavy traffic in that part of Sacramento, and you have to be there first thing in the morning.
I didn't realize that they would haul the birds in those little crates. They can't even stand up in those things. The crates were stacked and hauled on a flatbed trailer. It's pouring rain. That was a really brutal thing for me to do to them. I'm grateful that they offered to do the drive for me but I had no idea that they would have so little regard for the chickens during transport. Butchering them at home would have been so much more humane.

What a great little hen!

Oh that must have been hard. I'm sorry Kim.

OK Kim Riley. I came over here hoping for some more great ghost stories and what do I find? NADA. Time to share the wealth.

OK here's a cute, true story I read about Halloween.

At 8:00pm on October 31st two fire-fighters could see a fire raging in a back yard. It was clearly in breach of the rule on burning leaves after dark. One of the fireman knocked on the door, and they both waited each holding their helmet in their hand. A little old woman opened the door and promptly dropped a bar of candy into each helmet. She then told them, "Aren't you boys are a little old for trick or treat?", and closed the door. The fire-fighters left open mouthed.
