CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

Thanks everyone. My garden is lovely this year. We haven't had much rainfall so have had to rely on drip irrigation. I have about 70 trees on the property, mostly eucalyptus and alleppo pine but I have locust, chitalpas, palo verde, mulberry and some fruit trees.

I have a silkie sitting on eggs for about a week now and hope they hatch. My frizzle sat on 8 eggs and none hatched which is strange since I hatched 5 of the same breed eggs in the incubator. They were the ones the coyote got. The coyotes are bad this year for invading our space and I'm sure it's because of this idiot that thinks he can clear all this land to plant 100,000 pistachio trees and it's upsetting the environment. This is the desert and our water supply is limited but I guess he doesn't have the sense the good Lord gave a goose.

Hey! Everyone! I just found this thread. Guess I can be added to it since I live in the high desert of California. I actually live in a little(don't blink) town called Inyokern, just off 395 halfway between Bishop and Los Angeles. I have the full view of the Sierras from my front porch and I love to sit in my swing with a cup of coffee and enjoy the view. That is if it's not windy. Yuk! I hate the wind. I have chickens, quail, parakeets and finches as well as a German Shepherd and a cat. I love to read, quilt, crochet and garden. Hope to enjoy visiting with you all.
Welcome to the thread! So nice to see new people when they show up. I love the pics. I don't see mountains from Modesto and I sure miss them. Bay Area has views of them everywhere. Oh and I hate the wind too. Especially after this year.

Still unpacking the care form our trip to the Bay this weekend. My grand daughter Khamaria turned 15 last week and my itty bitty baby boy Dakotah (he's 6'3"!) will be 17 tomorrow. I can't believe after 3 decades I won't have a baby, but a OMG!!! MAN next year. Scary. So we had a luau and it was freezing cool. I could have done without most of the DJ's music and Dakotah is loves Rock and none was played, so I told him next year, he can have his Rock n Roll party. LOL

I got no pics since I was doing so many things and trying to deal with my back. My video of the hot fudge flowing from the cake didn't come out at all. There was such a crowed around it I had to hold my phone over everyone and didn't get it at all. Even the pics before didn't show the smoke, but it was smokin with dried ice and water. And it had my favorite, fondant on it. I love that stuff. So these pics are of the cake, my daughter Veronica made and the 99 cake pops that I made. Had a good time, but I'm beat!!

What great pictures. That cake is something my granddaughter would make. Her wedding cake that she made herself was a pumpkin (actuallt 3) since she got married in October.

I always wanted to get married on Halloween so I could have a Halloween theme. I got to make a cake for one a long time ago, so at least that was one. The one she made last 2 years ago for the same grand daughter was a turn table that moved. I have one daughter, the one who's daughter's birthday it was, who is more of the idea and organizer of my kids. She's the one who manages to get everyone else to do the work while she supervises. LOL I've made apple cake pops and werewolf cupcakes for all the Twilight parties and viewings she's put together. Fun, but I'm to old for all those stuff to often, so got off easy actually, with the cake pops and potato salad. There was a ton of food last night and everyone took home tons. The kids all had a good time and we had 2 Wiis hooked up and it was so much fun to watch from some of the littlest kids there to the grownups dancing to those games. But I have 2 of my daughters now decorate cakes, so they took over for me and sometimes I think I should do it more and then times like this weekend I think, I'm lucky to have gotten through dipping things in chocolate. LOL

Wolftracks, you sound like me. I used to decorate cakes a lot and gave parties at my home but I'm too old now not to let the younger ones have their chance. I'm still asked to provide things like fried chicken and pies that my family love but the planning and the work I leave to others.

Before my husband died, everything just about was at our house. Well until this cracker box I'm trying to get out of. I planned all of those, but my daughters caught my, gotta try this bug. Number 3 though has never been the hands on kind of person the others are. My youngest son isn't much for it either. Now my oldest used to love to hang out when I was doing catering and he can throw a gourmet meal together that is so awesome you keep eating till you hurt and still want more. He's girlfriend is an assistant to to a very famous chef, drat she has a clause I can't brag about, LOL, but she brags all the time about how great a cook my son is. Besides going to school and working his regular job, he's also a personal trainer, so everything thing has to be very healthy and organic and farm grown, but you'd never know it to eat what he's made. They splurge one day a month on something just fun to eat, but his girlfriend said it's amazing how much better she feels since he has cooked for her. Little does she know that he also calls me sometimes and we come up with recipes, but I figure if he's the one cooking, he gets the credit. She did thank me for teaching him to cook. LOL

Thanks for the welcome. Because of the view is the reason we retired here. I'll see what I can find to send you a picture of the view from my front porch.
Yeah! my Mountains! (I grew up in Bishop)

My Polish are all LF. I got 2 girls and a boy. (Love auto sexing!!!)
I have Buff Laced Chicks right now, if anyone is interested. I have 2 Jaerhon hens too. They are cheep, as they have curls toes. But they are great egg layers, of med white eggs. Great forregers too! I have cream Legbars under a hen now and a BIG batch of Jearhons too....and maybe a gold cuckoo Marans in there too.....?

I am looking for German New Hampshires in CA. Had crappy luck with shipped chicks and eggs. $ or trades, PM and I can give you a run down of what I have.

...Marans that eat eggs?!?! We have never had any....how odd. Hens from Alice? She got rid of all her eggs eaters, but they were RIRs, no Marans.

I really love it here except for the wind. It's been blowing now for days and it does get tiresome. I can't work in the garden because of the dust blowing. I love the mountain view when it is covered in snow. It's breath taking. Sorry to hear about the egg eating. Mine have never done it. I have a motley bunch. My rooster Henry, is a Maran/silkie and is very gently. I have 8 hens in the big pen, two Turkens, two Silkies, two Wyandott's, a Plymouth Rock and a red whatever. All lay and the Turkens lay huge brown eggs. My smaller pen has the bantams. I do have a Polish that's 8 years old that my neighbor gave me to rescue. All her other chickens died of old age except this one. She still lays several eggs a week, bless her. I have a pair of Old English Game hens, and a pair if Frizzles and an odd black one of unknown origin. The two roosters get along just fine and all but the Polish will eat out of my hand.

Alice?? My birds Black Coppers are from Bev Davis. I have never had a problem with them until last month and can't get it to stop.
