CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

hmmm quotes not working. How shocking.
Sunny I would have too. I was going to toss them and each time I went to do it a chick was in there. Matter of fact I have one drying out. He was half out last night but was stuck this morning, so I had to help him.
I've spent since 6:45 watching a fire burn out across the street. Dakotah left for school this morning and came back in to tell me something was on fire. My neighbor moved out this weekend which I'm sad about and came back yesterday to put her garbage can out, along with the extra trash. If it's to high here, they will either not pick it up or dump it in the street. I guess what got left behind looked like it would be interesting to watch burn, so someone lite it up. It was small, but by 7:15 I didn't want to babysit it any more and my hose wouldn't go that far, so I called and had the FD put it out. They recognized me from out new city meeting last night where I think I made a wonderful first impression. NOT! Oh and my wonderful Vanessa also must have made one. I don't know where she gets it, but I hate asking a question and having it skirted. Our new mayor and a few of many he had with him, tried to use humor to get around information and ......weeeelll, we wanted answers.
Then my news that has me ready to start crying. One of the ladies there raises her hand and says "What about all these chicken coops? Everyone has chickens and they don't need chickens!" Mayor says, "Well, chickens are grandfathered in if I'm not mistaken." then he gets a nod from someone else and says "Chickens, but no ROOSTERS!" OK first. DUH!!!! Second, who elected a man who doesn't know that they are all chickens and the difference is hen and rooster? Third, NO ROOSTERS????? My daughter and her friend jerked their heads around to see if I was alright.
Once the meeting was over we got bombarded with members who came to talk to us about our concerns. I guess they figured they better talk to us now instead of later. Our area becomes City instead of County on June 1st. I guess when Vanessa told them they didn't want her to go Oakland on them, the decided they better not fan the flames. LOL Anyway, one of the ladies there gives me some info on one of the problems and I tell her that I am trying to move, but now I have to rush. Then tell her about my birds and that I have several roosters.Another woman that was giving us info leaned in. They said not to worry to soon about the birds and that the only way I'll get caught is if someone complains. Well I hear 3 of my roos out there crowing up a storm and I can hear Lowrider with his dinky little gurgle. I do want to move, but I don't want to just take the first thing I find and I don't want to lose my boys. I love my hens, but there's just something about these roosters that make me smile. It sucks!
So sorry to hear about the annexation and problems with it.

Grandfathering does not mean they can change the rules. You would be able to keep Roosters if the old rules are Grandfathered in. If the city rules allow hens but not roosters, then the people new to raising chickens would not be able to have roosters.

Make sure you get some type of document saying you are Grandfathered in under the old county rules and make lots of copies.

Here in Woodland, inside the city limits, is a working farm with Cattle, sheep, chickens and etc. The area was annexed in the late 60s or early 70s and they have been able to keep their exception all these years.

With all that said, I hope you can move to a larger better place soon.

I took my EO Basque Roosters out for some fun in the grass and picture taking yesterday.

This is the group photo:

This one goes with me when I fill up their feeder

This is Rooster 4. I will keep two of the roosters, currently it looks like Rooster 3 and Rooster 4. Rooster 1 is also a contender.

This one bites. Rooster 5:

The EO Basque Chicks are 6 weeks old today and tomorrow.

Oh oh oh....Where do I get this? I want to make sure I'm ready. Man this woman was so anti chicken that brought the subject up, I was shocked! She wasn't too happy to find out about the grandfathering at all.

I'll let my chicken whisperer know too. I let him know about what was said at the meeting, but he has souns boxes for his birds. He also has a better income than I do to set them up, but even if you hear one of his roosters, it's faint and there are 2 houses between us. I mostly hear them if they are out from in cages.

I have a friend down south that uses those plastic storage boxes lined with rugs and ventilated with small holes to put over her roosters every night. She has over 20 males. She has a idiot nieghbor and it has worked for two years now....just a lot of work.

Please send a link to making these. I will be hiding some roosters here.

I don't know of a link for making these, she just figured it out and they seem to work. It is just keeping them in the dark and something to muffle the crowing. She puts one bird in one container each night and lets them out in the morning.

Ron do you have a link for the LORE thread?

Walt I'm trying to picture it. So does she had a coop with an area for the containers and then lines them up and covers them? Or does she box each one and use the lid? I'm dreading this right now. I have several roos that I can't catch even once in a while to dip during pest control.

OMG! I'm putting hopp coops out there. Maybe if I build one just for the roos and figure out some way of putting the containers in there and grab then at night...............I'm getting to old for this stuff! I've been trying to come up with a solution to have feeding and watering stretched to 4 or 5 days or more. I spend a lot of time going from one pen to the other and it's wearing me out. Rabbits I have to do daily since they will eat anything you put in there in a day, but now IDK. I was hoping to have more area to put separate breeds, but now I'm not sure how I'll do this. I have quail too, but didn't think to ask about them. Basically they're quiet, so I don't think I'll have a problem, but maybe I should as about grandfathering them as well??

Hi Wolftracks Kim,

The LORE thread is:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...ect-find-submit-local-chicken-laws-ordinances

Post there and see if someone knows of a local resource to help you.
