CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

Ron do you have a link for the LORE thread?

Walt I'm trying to picture it. So does she had a coop with an area for the containers and then lines them up and covers them? Or does she box each one and use the lid? I'm dreading this right now. I have several roos that I can't catch even once in a while to dip during pest control.

OMG! I'm putting hopp coops out there. Maybe if I build one just for the roos and figure out some way of putting the containers in there and grab then at night...............I'm getting to old for this stuff! I've been trying to come up with a solution to have feeding and watering stretched to 4 or 5 days or more. I spend a lot of time going from one pen to the other and it's wearing me out. Rabbits I have to do daily since they will eat anything you put in there in a day, but now IDK. I was hoping to have more area to put separate breeds, but now I'm not sure how I'll do this. I have quail too, but didn't think to ask about them. Basically they're quiet, so I don't think I'll have a problem, but maybe I should as about grandfathering them as well??

She prepared a bunch of these boxes. Every night she goes into the pen and puts the box upside down over the rooster on the ground. There is no way to do it if they are on a perch. Her birds now are used to it so they squat down and she covers them. She can walk into her cages.

Thank you Ron!

So I could possibly be able to do this even in a breed pen. Ziggy is so not gonna go for this! LOL Will they b e alright on solid ground or should I start using straw? I use sand for easier cleanup and they've worked most of that into the ground lately. I just worry about them freezing or getting too hot. Last summer I had set a tub out back and had it open side up to dry after cleaning. I found one of my FBCM hens under it dead. It must have been just aweful for her, because her vent was bleeding and she looked just aweful. These days the tubs go upside down and something gets set on them. I know they will have vents and the rugs, I'm just wondering if I'll cook them in my area.

I sure did, wow a space cadet....and a roof too? I assume I missed that too :)

fabulous job...

don't let them tell mine in clayton, it's going to get really hot out there this summer....I'm trying to convince mine that it's a day spa and they are in the sauna portion!

I don't even remember what AC feels like. Oh yes I do. If you want to cool of just go to the mall and sit.

Cheryl do you have fluffy white towels for your sauna birds?

OK I've had such a hard time hatching out FBCMs. Today my most recent late bird is from my hen that lays the darkest egg. Her eggs are round and it's hard to find the top. I can see diddly when I try to candle. So I look to see if I have anything else in there and it's zipping. Later I check and obviously had the egg upside down. The bottom is pushed off and my chicks feet are in the air and he's stuck to the shell. I got him out to help him, but he must have been still attached to the yolk and kicked it off. There's yolk on him and he's pulled out something through his vent. He's drying and cheeping, but I've had chicks like this before and if they don't die at first that fool me into thinking they are doing just fine and drop dead a few weeks later. I hope that isn't the case. I really want and need this one. I'm up to 3 Silver Phoenix now. I don't know when they are due since there were extras in the nest from what my broody started with and since she killed the first 3 I just grabbed them out and I'm letting them hatch as I go. I think you can tell cockerel from pullet at hatch, so I need to fine some pics to see what I have. On a good note, I've been hatching more pullets than cockerels this year. Doubt that happens with these Phoenix though.
