Had a pretty bad prolapse on my call duck hen this morning. I was able to push everything back in, and I have her isolated inside with her sister to keep her away from the drake. She was laying eggs last week but stopped laying within the past few days, and I didn’t feel an egg in her when she was prolapsed.

This is my first time ever dealing with prolapse, so I’m just crossing my fingers that it stays in after she poops. I’ve already cleaned the area but I’m not sure if a warm bath/applying some raw honey or vaseline to the area would help if it stays in or if that wouldn’t be necessary. Any advice from anyone who’s dealt with this before would be really appreciated.

I just watched her poop when I came to check on her and it’s back out. I’ll try to get a picture of it, but I’ll be giving her a warm soak in the tub and applying some raw honey to the area.

This is what the prolapse looked like before I pushed it back in and applied honey. It looks worse than it did this morning. She’s clearly in a lot of pain, and I want to save her, but I just don’t know what to do if it won’t stay in. :(

Poor baby. I have dealt with a few prolapsed hen ducks and you are doing well.
I had success with witch Hazel and Manuka honey. Then I pushed a little more honey inside twice a day for a couple days.
Keep her inside and give electrolyte water, no food for a day, so she won’t poop, to give a rest .
A vet can make a stitch to help it stay in. I couldn’t go to vet so I did my best at home.
I heard about trying to get her to stop laying eggs by keeping her in a dark crate for a couple weeks, no sunshine, and I tried that, but it did not even work and then she didn’t molt for a couple of years.
Maybe I didn’t keep her in there long enough, but it was sad and her prolapse was staying in so I let her back out and she has been fine ever since.
I did, however, remove the large chickens that were living with the ducks that were scaring them. I think it was fear that made her prolapse because she couldn’t find a safe place to lay her egg without being harassed by a giant chicken.
Another thing some people use on prolapse is preparation H it’s supposed to shrink it.
I tried that recently on a very old duck who prolapsed I think it did shrink a little, but her case was different because this was her third prolapse in her lifetime and she was very old at this point, and it was hard and had black areas of dead tissue and smelled bad so I ended up putting her to sleep recently . Yesterday actually.
I hope your little Ducks prolapsed will stay in, there is a good chance with the honey, and you holding it in and adding more honey every day for a couple days, keeping her inside, quiet and clean, only feed her a little lettuce for the day, you can give some vitamins in the water or the electrolyte water like I mentioned.

Thank you for your advice! I’ll remove her food for the day and continue with the honey. Ours is just from the beekeepers across the street who gave us a jar of their raw honey. I put some shades in the room for now to keep it darker. She has some waterfowl Vitamix in her water that she seems to be enjoying. Her prolapse did stay in for about an hour after her last soak this time. It’s back out again and I have her in another epsom salt bath, so my hope is that it will stay in longer each time until it stops prolapsing. We only have an exotic vet here that charges $300 just to walk through the door, so home care is our only option as well. I think one of the other drakes may have been targeting her and causing the prolapse, so I’m just going to make a bachelor area for the drakes at least through breeding season. I’ll check my local stores and see if they carry any preparation H. I’m so sorry for your loss :(

I ended up needing more epsom salt, so I had to run to multiple stores to try to find some while she was in the tub. That took about an hour and by the time I got home she had flown out of the tub and was sitting on the bath mat looking much more like herself. And when I picked her up to look at her, the prolapse had gone back in on its own! I still applied more honey to her vent but I’m really hoping that means it will stay this time.

It prolapsed again last night, but went back in on its own again with another epsom salt bath and honey application. I woke up to her protesting not being outside and was hoping she was doing well, and it stayed in! I checked on her in the afternoon and she’d flown out of her pen and laid an egg on the floor, so I’m assuming that’s what was causing it. She seems back to normal and I’ve had her outside under supervision, but will still be bringing her inside tonight to keep her separated from the drake for now.
