I have been raising call duck for two years. At first, incubation and the magic formula to get those eggs to hatch was our issue. Now, figuring that part out, my new concerns are the mating habits of calls. Last year, we had 5 females and 3 males. These were adolescent ducks and not very active when mating. Sadly, we lost some females to predators over the fall and winter. Just recently, we introduced two 3 months old females to the group. This made our numbers 6 females to 3 males. For the most part, they were separated with a few our of yard time during the day. All was well...then the three drakes attacked one of the females so badly she looked like she had been scalped. They were about to start on another when I caught them and separated males from females. The female that had the snot beaten out of her died after two days.
Additionally, I have 6 calls that are about 2 months old in a coral house. Also, 5 unsexed calls in my house that are a month old and 5 that are about 3 days old being kept inside. These we incubated.
Suggestions please on how to keep them healthy and safe. Obviously, we will not truly know the gender of the younger calls for a few months. Any suggestions would be appreciated. New territory for me. I am heartbroken for the female that was beaten so badly, and ready to get rid of the drakes!
