Call Ducks Finally Hatched

Yes In very anxious!!! Luckily I just got 2 pairs of calls yesterday and I have all my Ancona ducklings to take care of and keep me busy. I've been moving animals around. Moved the ducklings out with the adult ducks, moved my bob whites into the pen the ducklings were in....now I have the brooder free for the call ducklings to hatch! I really hope that at least 2 hatch, cause otherwise I'm going to have to find a duckling friend for the one since I don't have anymore eggs incubating :/

Hey question everyone. I have the opportunity to buy show quality grey pair for $40. I know they are one of the main colors, is it a wise idea to have them in my flock? For color variation I mean. I have a pair of snowys, a blue fawn drake, and a black hen.

The Greys are nice to have. They're not a favorite of mine but that's only because I like "different" and they look just like the mallards only slightly smaller. I've never seen a true "show quality" pair for that cheap though so just be cautious as to what people tell you. I would jump on it though if they are. Anything happening with the eggs yet?

I trust him he's a great guy. He runs the auction house so I have a feeling he got them in a trade and doesn't want them. I'm holding off though, there's a pair of SQ blue fawn pieds plus a black magpie hen for $120. Think ill wait to hear back on those.

The one is rocking. I'm about 95% positive the other two died off. Don't know what I'm going to do with one lonely duckling. Can't put it with the older ones they are WAY too big. I dunno.

Wouldn't I still see movement though??
Barely, if they are upside down, your hardly going to see movement unless they push on that membrane, I would hate for you to wait any longer, I'm thinking perhaps it's time to make that safe hole. I would hate to wait one more day and lose them all, did you temp going down at all during the process? Perhaps they are just delayed because of it.

Na I would make the safe hole, it's not going to hurt them only help them breath see if you can get them to move a little quicker. Are you opening that bator a lot?

I have been wondering. I understand that when a chick dips in the shell, it is getting ready to hatch. But what is "dipping"., actually? Is the size of the growing chick causing pressure to the the air cell, causing the air cell to expand over a larger surface? Sorry about the silly question. I would like to understand it better.

Ahh... you are so close Peach! Are you going crazy? I found the waiting easier if I work on little projects inside or out keeps me more occupied and not checking every 5 minutes for changes.

Wishing you and your chicks well.
Dipping is ready to hatch time basically. When you look into an egg you will see the air cell in a perfect circle. When they are getting ready to internally pip, it's usually 24 hours but the perfectly round circle will take a fall, it falls to one side. So now your circle is no longer a circle it will be at a slant. This is when they will break through that membrane and get some air. If they don't then they die..

It kind of has to do with the growing of the chick but the real meaning is internal pipping time. So it gets all squoshed inside that shell it can't move any more lungs are being pressed so they have to break through that membrane to get to the air cell and take there first breath before it's to late. So the dipping is basically enough air for them to expand those lungs to get ready to break out of jail. That's why you can hear them peeping all of a suddenly because there poor little lungs aren't being pressed on any more and they can expand them to talk to you.. crazy how things work.
