Okay kind of stupid question, but I've seen that you need to watch the air sac? Exactly WHAT needs to be watched and what does it look like? I have two mystery duck eggs (either silver appleyards or welsh harlequins OR saxonys) and tomorrow is day 25. I also have about 12 Anconas due to hatch on various days next week and after. Thanks for any help. I can see the two moving so know they are alive!
OK on Day 25 You do not need to worry about the Air sac at this point. The ONLY time you need to worry about the Air Cell is when you FIRST get the egg Especially if they have been shipped, if you candle the egg and I find the Best way to candle them is to download a free App on your cell phone called "flashlight", you need to have a camera phone of course, but when you candle you can see one end has no space, this is USUALLY the Smaller end of the egg, and on the opposite side of the egg, will have an opened space kind of like an air pocket, this is your Air cell. This is Usually at the bigger end.
Now, This air pocket is suppose to be at the big end ALL THE TIME, However, when eggs are shipped or moved around WAY to much, it will break free. NOT GOOD.. if you take your egg and candle it on its side and that air pocket has broken free, it will be at the top as your rolling the egg in a circle . It will just following your around, you tip it upside down it will be there. No it's not because it likes you it's because its DETACHED. I have never been successful at hatching anything once the air cell has been detached. So for me these eggs are tossed.. And believe me I have tried and tried and tried to get a Detached air cell to hatch, I can't even get them to develop. But one day, I will figure out a method for this and when I do it will be posted on my website..
So any hoot, that's what we call a detached air cell its basically seeing a bubble, sometimes more than one bubble floating around in the egg..
Now if you candle your egg and see that the Air Pocket is moving but still at the top, This is called Loose Air Cell. You can see a loose air cell by holding your egg from the little end, take your candler and shine it at the big end, then move your egg slightly to the left and right, you will see the air cell moving. Air cells are not suppose to move at all. To me it looks like a Ball of Jelly LOL.
Loose Air cells are Still attached to the big end of the shell but just moving around, this is NOT an egg to toss, it is still possible to get a hatching out of it.
My last Call duck hatching, I had Four loose air cells. from day one to hatching day. So loose air cells are NOT a total lose.. I just hatched out 4 baby cochins all with loose air cells. Now sometimes when you see growth starting in a loose air cell the air cell will stop moving around and start sticking again.. This usually happens as the baby chick gets bigger and bigger, my theory is the baby chick is growing and forcing pressure on the membrane helping the air cell to stick back into place.. But like I said, sometimes they never stick....
WOW I felt like I wrote a book. LOL well I hope this makes some sort of since to you. If you have any question FIRE AWAY...
