Call Ducks Finally Hatched

He can hatch face down, no need to move him upright, the upright position is only for your viewing and apparently your little guy is shy and doesn't want you to see the mess he's about to make. Dark sticky stuff could be a number of things, I would not worry about it right now. Keep that bator closed though, he could shrink wrap. It will take a LONG time for him to come out, they aren't like chickens, chickens are in such a rush to get out they could careless, ducks will they have a lot of prepping to do. They like to make sure there fur is combed neatly, there make up is on properly etc. etc. so be patient if he's like this for OVER 24 hours then and only then will worry about him but right now. I would just sit on your hands or go to bed because it's going to be a long long process before he shows you what he is made of.. Also, what day is he on?

Ive seen that kind of discolor in the eggs before and if I recall it was due of to much moisture. So he's probably sticky, give him 24 hours will see how things go.

Thanks! Today was day 28 so right on time. 4 others are pipped and a 5th one is VERY SLOWLY thinking about zipping. I don't want to open with all that going on if I don't have to. This is the only one with the crazy discoloration so that's what really worried me. I'll wait and see how it goes....but going to bed, no way!! I might miss something exciting like another small crack! These ducks take FOREVER!!!!

ETA: I don't know for sure how long he's been like this since he was face down. I posted just as soon as I rolled him over and knew he had pipped.

YES they do..Well we can't worry about when he actually started we can only go by what's happening now, since he did it on time, he's doing OK..

I don't see yolk show me the yolk? I see his swelled up vent though
I am sorry Lori

I waited for your reply. I checked again before I went to bed around 11, and didn't see anything. I did take the onion out and put in the inkie with a fan because the yolk absorbed. When the chick dried I put it in the brooder. It is a little weak, but hanging in there. I gave it a bit of liquid vitimins this morning, should perk it up.
Thanks for helping. Oh I guess it has a swolen vent like you said. Is that really bad?

Don't do anything, it will take a longer time but you need that vent to shrink but he'll be OK. Don't give him anything until he can lift his head up, fear he may aspirate.

So just let him close up that vent and once his head is up give him just a drop of vitamins, do this about twice a day.

Love all the cute duckling pics! Hope everyone had a good easter. I have been super busy the last few days, hubby brought me goats!

Sorry but another question. I have one egg that internally pipped at least 24 hours ago. I am wondering if it would be ok to use a little lancett, like the ones diabetics use to get the little drop of blood with to male a little safe hole?
