Call Ducks Finally Hatched

Heehee Lacrystol.  Yes.  Let them do the work.  I don't understand how a real duckasaurus who sits on her eggs can make them come out ok and the 'bators can be a challenge.  Like, how does she control humidity and stuff?  Now you don't have to take the 'bator to work and hide it.

lol that's sooooo true about work however they are first timers so it's possible they could quit early. It is odd that the know. I think it's more on the weather, once the weather is a certain temp/humidity then they go broody!! That's my guess I'm thinking there body temps are changing so they change with the weather. Because why would they go broody in the middle of June. Why not July, or March when it's decent. I have had a couple of mine go broody IN the snow. Omg she was buried in the snow last year but she was not giving up. Needless to say they didn't hatch but she tried. Lol. So I guess you have a very good question on how they can do it sooooo well and each time too. Hum now you got me wondering.

I've watched everything they do but never thought of the broody timing.

that totally makes sense about the seasonal broodiness. It's nature's way of ensuring a successful hatching. But I never gave it any thought ever before. Somehow something knows when they have to lay and sit for optimum humidity. The wild ducks do it all the time and seem to have no problems laying during the right time of year.

After going on strike for a week, my call hens have started laying again, i think they are plotting another hatch since they are laying in a nest box rather than any old where.

TRUE so very true.

Heebeepus.  More webs on the lil call ducks.  I love duck feets when they are attached to cute ducks.  Yours are cute.  what is it about these birds that turns me into a dork?  Are you able to hold your babies OK?  or do they resist?  That has to be funny to watch  them fly.  I have gotten so used to pet ducks not  being able to fly and it's rare to see or hear of them do it.  The little one in the top pic looks as though she's leading an aerobics or dance class.  So perfect.

They're at the 'I'm too cool to hang out with mama anymore' teenager phase, lol... they will let me pick them up when they're stuck in a pen they flew into, and they wrap their necks around mine to snuggle when that happens, but I don't pick them up other than that now... they will come up and bill me when I sit in the grass and they love scratches on their chests...
Now the baby still loves to cuddle... she sits on the couch with us each night, lol...
