Call Ducks Finally Hatched

That is so awsome! I am getting duck vitamins. What kind exactly do you use?

Oh, if anyone wants to know, I figured out to breed black magpie to breed true in 3 generations. It is in how dominate and recessive genes express themselves to look like magpie, If you breed bibed to pied, the females are missing one (Bu) buff dilution which makes their offspring throw off all different patterns.

I was reading that this is a problem, because most breeders are not breeding true colors any more. At least in the magpie. The genetic stuff just blew my mind before, but is making sense now.
WHANNNNNN I don't have a pied.

What type of onions did you use? I am not second guessing here, but it is interesting that eating onions would be bad for a duck. Makes me wonder just what about onions make them asorb? If one type of onion is better than another?
Onions Help kill any Bacteria that my get onto the Yolk, The important thing when it comes to unabsorbed yolk is to KEEP IT WET. It has to stay completely wet, otherwise the veins will get blood cots and kill the baby.

NO you don't let the Ducks eat it, you simply cut up an onion and place it around the bottom of the bator, helps with bacteria so that they can absorb faster..

does NOT matter if the onion is RED, Yellow or white..

Once the Yolk has been Exposed they are put into DANGER ZONE. The yolk is like a magnet at this point, it will catch or will catch any thing that is floating around in that bator. Things that you can not see yourself. That is why there's a lot of losses.. I'm sure you read over and over Don't help. Because your basically putting them in jepordy.

The sooner you start the onion trick the Faster it can work to temporary protect the yolk from getting any bacteria inside. I say temporary because if you have an exposed yolk that hasn't even started to absorb, it's likey won't work. It usually works best if they have already started and just has that little quarter size left..

They have to have already started.

THE BONUS PART OF ALL THIS IS YOUR BATOR SMELLS SOOO GOOD IF YOUR AN ONION PERSON!!

ONE MORE THING, it's not a good idea to use the onion if you have eggs that are still trying to hatch. it's only good for those that are already exposed..

the Important thing is to KEEP THEM WET, raise that humidty.. if you have it at 65 get it up to 75 even 80 but ONLY if you have there heads out. You don't want it that high for those that are still trying to hatch.

Good to know. PS Im being told by UK call duck breeders that the one duckling may be a trout, which is a light phase of mallard. Probably came from your silver Appleyard duck with the mallard male.

Hi Lori,

I wasn't planning on feeding any duck onions. It was interesting that something toxic to ducks could also save them. I have my one call duck in the incubator. At day 5 I will add bantam chick eggs so they will hatch at the same time so the duck will have company. Is this ok, or will they hate each other. I imagine I will get more call eggs soon because it is warming up again. That may take too long. I have seen chicks die from loneliness, but Megan grew up just fine. I put her on my shoulder most of the day, until she started pooing allot. yuck!

Lori,

in your instructions for the lazy method, you say to keep eggs with detached or loose air sacs upright until you see development. If the air cell is good, do you lay it on the turner flat from the beginning? or start it big end up until you see development?

Thanks!

They won't hate each other, its good for them to have a companion. Yes they can die from loneliness, however, a stuffed animal will produce the same results. LOL... but don't be surprise when its time for the duck to go outside the chickens will want to be with her. Yes, the chickens will hang out with her even while she's swimming so becareful that the chickens don't attempt to try and swim with her. Remember the duck is all they will know and will follow her, since ducks grow up faster then chickens they will think hummmm check out our mom... She looks like she's having a ball.LOL
Ive had it happen several times with my chicks, some not so lucky but some I was able to get out of the pool in time.

If the air cell looks good, you could start laying them down right away, but Ive treated those the same way until I see development so that I can start them all at the same time. usually in 4 days you can tell if you have a good enough light.
