Call Ducks Finally Hatched

Thanks, sorry about yours too. I only pulled one of the two dead ones out of the shell. I hate seeing them like that. I was planning on buying one more batch of hatching eggs off of eBay but I'm not so sure now. Seems like shipping just beats the poor little guys up.

It can yes. I had 60 eggs shipped in the last batch of last year and only 10 lived. It's the same with chickens too. Depends a lot on how they're packaged though too. I used water noodle type styrofoam piping to wrap mine that I shipped to Lori. The last I heard 5 of 6 were developing so that's pretty good odds. Hopefully the 5 will all make it to hatch. Time will tell. I have 1 due this weekend, 5 next weekend and 7 the Wed after. I have about 20 cochin bantams in lockdown right now (1 out and several pipped). Then have Tolbunt and Creole Polish, Silkies, Seramas, Duccles and more cochin bantams in the other incubator LOL

Hi Peach, Clousert, Lori,

This not an emergency, I just need to know what you would suggest for the best options I will have open to me tomorrow. For now I think I have done everything necessary. Pictures to follow this post.

I went out to feed and give fresh water to the ducks this morning. I found one of my call hens caught in the aviary netting. It was my fault because I forgot to staple that section to the wooden fence.

The netting scraped off feathers oh her head, may have injured one of her eyes.

I cut her loose and brought her into the house. I ran a tub of water and carefully washed all the dirt from her. I put luberderm eye drops in both eyes, and a layer of bacitracin antibiotic to the injured eye. Washed her head with a gentel solution of peroxide and water. and put a layer of antibiotics over that. It had no pain relief properties, and of course, I tried it in my eye first.

She is resting easy now, preening herself, eating and drinking.

My question is when I should put her back out with the other ducks again, and should I give her a shot of Tylan beforehand? Should I wait for her head to scab over first? Will her eye clear up, or become blind? What should I look for, and what signs should I worry about?

Pictures to follow.

Sorry your duck is hurt mom :( Sounds not serious though, although I'm no duckspert.

Thanks sweet heart!

I worry about infection, and part of the net was really tight around her neck. I should have taken care of that extra net right away. I just did not see what coming.

I would put that blue kote on her, but it is for horses and dogs from what I read. ? Don't worry, I can only do my best at this point. And she is getting stronger now. Sunny does great with one eye. but I really think her eye will heal just fine.

And you should be getting better at the duckspert stuff! I am counting on you to take care of the ducks when I am too senile to carry on. And who else would take care of me?
instead of just send me to the hoarders support poultry group? But hey! Peach will be there too!

Cross your fingers this last egg makes it. Today is day 26, look like it internally pipped sometime this evening. I opened the other two, both dead, fully formed, unabsorbed yolk, died off the past 2 days.

Not exactly what I was expecting from 14 eggs. Not happy, hope this single one makes it.

Have you made him a safe hole?
