Call Ducks Finally Hatched

Ummm, mealworms work just fine to get mandie babies eating, and a lot safer than dropping them imo. Theres a big difference between jumping and being dropped in how you land, no way i am going to drop my ducklings. My first mandie egg is due Friday, one i stuck in my incubator to see if they were fertile, i am so excited!

What temperature and humidity do you have them at? Are you misting them? basically just tell me all your hatching secrets!

I read after day 27 that you should check for internal pips and then do a safety hole. How do I see this? I can see the air cells but not much more when I candled. And is it on day 28 or before?

It looks like you are saying that you had two that are already hatched out, and more that have not internally pipped yet.

Lori says you make the safety hole 24 hours after they have internally pipped, if they have not yet started to zip. When they internally pip you will see a shadow of it's little bill in the air cell. Usually I can see it waiving around. Make a small hole so the egg doesn't dry out.

Okay so if I have this right, you have two that are already hatched?

And others that haven't done external pip?

And you are on day 26?

If above is all correct, then check for internal pip. As Diane said, usually you can shine a light and see the beak. You can also hold the egg up to your ear and you should hear a "tapping" sound,

Once you have established that it is internally pipped, wait at least 24 hours or 1 day after due date. So wait until day 27, then you can make a tiny safe hole, you don't want it big, you can use a needle, all it does is stops the ducklings from suffocating.

Then wait another 24 hours after safe holing before intervening anymore.

Clousert where in the world did you hear that you need to drop a duckling in order to get it to eat? I've been raising calls for years and have never heard such a thing! lol I've never had a problem with my babies not eating...I just add a bit of water to make a soft mash and they eat it right up.

And who else has Calls that lay white eggs? I've never had any of my calls lay anything but a green egg...no matter what color the ducks are, my eggs are ALWAYS green. hmmmmm this is weird

We were talking about dropping mandarin tree ducks and I have 2 call duck hens that lay white eggs and 2 that lay green eggs.

Congrats on your soon to be little one. I wasn't talking about throwing them down to the ground, just holding them up a couple feet and letting them jump out of your hand so to speak. Wouldn't be any different then letting them jump out of a tree nest.

Ha sorry SUPER busy weekend!!!! All made it but one quit before pipping. So 4 from you out I believe. There's two piers....I need to sort through and figure out which ones besides that are from yours..I have s good guess....based on their heads...weird I know but you'll see what I mean. Ill text you pics got my nieces first communion

Your on day 28??? You need to candle them at the Air cell, if internally pipped, you will see the beak, It's pretty Clear that it is the beak. At day 28 MAKE THE SAFE HOLE..
