Call Ducks Finally Hatched

Hows everyone been doing with there calls?

Been crazy here. My father ended up being rushed to the emergency room and undergoing major abdominal surgery. Discharged and within 12 hours had to be rushed back. Been there for the last 3 weeks now. I lost a few of the babies that I had just hatched. I'm pretty sure all of the silkie calls that I hatched are gone :'(. Dad is finally recovering and I am sure looking forward to some sleep! I had 5 more call babies hatch this week and the other 15 are feathering in nicely. I'm pretty bummed about the 5 I lost. I never usually put them outside in the coop that soon but I didn't have a choice this time. Here's to hoping that I'll have a chance to trade for some more silkie calls in the future. How's everything in your neck of the woods?

:) I love them too. I had several hatch out in the 20 babies I got. I'm still waiting for some paint silkies so I'm always open to swapping lol. I have 2 others waiting for call eggs right now though. My girls are on sabbatical right now. With 4 just coming off being broody and 3 molting I'm not getting enough eggs to ship an order. Hoping that within the next couple of weeks I'll get caught up though. I need to get out there and thin the flock though. 40 calls is about 20 too many for me. Just haven't had a chance to get anything done in the last 3 weeks that dad has been hospitalized and going through surgery. I need to figure out which of the new babies I'm going to keep and get the others up for sale. Hopefully things will calm down some here in the next day or 2 since they're talking about letting dad come home :)

Mine aren't laying at all, I thought it was to late in the season? that's good that yours is still laying, I just had someone ask me if I knew of anyone who had eggs. I'm like no. LOL what the heck are you feeding them? LOL

That's great about your dad, I know it's been an up and down rollar coaster for him...

SO GOOD! Wobbles hit three weeks yesterday but she's still soooo tiny even though she eats like a pig. She also has been losing fuzz on her tail so I think pinfeathers are gonna start growing in soon!

I meant to ask, someone on another thread stated that you can get a vague idea of gender early on since female ducklings will make a wider range of peeps. Is that true for call ducks?

We'll see. I have 2 still laying. 3 moulting and 4 that just finished brooding. They usually lay pretty much almost year around here since it doesn't get cold like up north. I don't heat my coops so they should take a break for a few months when it gets colder.

You're right, I don't care much for the naked necks but can always breed that trait out if I do happen to get some and don't end up liking them.

HUMM, I'm not sure if you can breed the gene out of them. I think it will just skip generations and then boom it's back. LOL

So tell me who do I need to get more magpies, the pied and who else? perhaps peach's fawn? this little one is soooo cute. I can't beleive I ended up with 3 gray hens from her. I had lost my last gray male then boom here comes three gray hens. LOL now I need a boy... Grrr
