Call Ducks Finally Hatched

Yes! Very exciting :) I have six
setting! How many do u have?

I also have six! Granted I don't expect all six to hatch though, but here's hoping. I wish call ducks weren't so hard to hatch!

I named her that because everytime I talked to her she would sass back at me. LOL VERY LOUD TOO.

Hehe I'm a big proponent of naming pets after their individual traits. That's how Wobbles became Wobbles! :p

@Lacrystol My temp is more like 101. No fan (still air) and no misting/sponging either. I didn't do it with my mallards I hatched out and my hatch rate was 92% (11 out of 12). Although, I know calls are much harder to hatch. What do you think?

@Amykins I don't expect all 6 to hatch either, though it makes me sad just thinking about all 6 not hatching. Well, for me 5. I'm pretty sure my first egg isn't fertile (when candling, it didn't have a blood ring) and the other 5 are fertile (when candling, they all had a blood ring). I won't remove it until I'm 110% sure though. I'm candling them all tomorrow (day 6). Like I said earlier, I candled only one last night (day 4) and it already had veins and the first thing I saw was it's sweet, little heartbeat! :) I'm only keeping one, aren't you only keeping one also?

Oh, thats reminds me! I forgot my second bator is still-air. The humidity is 40%, do I need to start misting the eggs this early?
I've mist mine once a day, and I held the spray bottle right above the eggs Not directly on them. Squirted up in the air and let it fall onto the eggs, but I don't be ANY water in my bator. in the winter time you want to Spray LESS and more In the Summertime.. Summertime it's good to do 3 times a day but winter less because of humidity. It seems if you keep spraying them you end up with Sticky babies so I would STRONGLY recommend less spraying in the winter months..

I would spray at Least once a week, helps avoid sticky issues.. If you have a good candler, you should see them on day 4 REALLY good... I use my phone, I have a free app called Flashlight.. Works great...

That's what I use too, but also keep in mind I didn't see veins on Wobbles' clutch until day 5. Or was it day 6...? Eh, either way, I'm not stressing it too much. :p

You should most definitely see a lot by day 4 in fact on this day you should see the SPIDER with all these leggs, which are the veins of course. HOWEVER, having them in an upright position it's going to be difficult to see it. SO what you need to do is when candling, hold them slightly to the side but watch your air cell if it looks like it's broke and goes to the bottom or to the side with you, your holding them at an angel to much usually these eggs for me. Do not make it,

So hold them to a slight tilt watch the air cell, keep it up at that top don't let it move around with you.. If that makes any since. i usually can tell on Day 2 if they are developing or not. Only because I know exactly what I'm looking for.. but it's harder for others to see it. If you candle them, I BET I can tell you what ones are showing signs of life but i would need a CLEAR pic..

Another thing you have to watch for is where the developing is happening. Ive had to FLIP my eggs upside down to get the embroy in the correct spot in order to continue to develop. Sometimes shipped eggs will cause the air cells to look strange. I'm not sure how to discribe it. But sometimes theres tons of space on the bottom then to one of the sides you can see like a dark spot then the actually air cells. sometimes the embroys get stuck inside the dark area. So i will flip my eggs upside down to get them to move out of this spot because theres not enough room for them to continue to grow. Once I have them in the spot they are suppose to be then all goes well..

I hope this makes some sort of sence..

No it does, luckily none of my eggs had rolling air cells, just a few saddle-shaped ones. I am a bit nervous about having to flip the eggs though. Would you be able to give a diagram, like a super quick microsoft paint drawing of where the developing embryo is supposed to be, and where it would appear if it were in the wrong spot? How would I have to flip them? Just put the small end up, or what?

Some people say they can get a deattached air cell to develop but for me, I never ever could. Mine usualy don't do anything and when opened they look unfertiled. GRRR.

i didn't think that would make since, I wish I took pictures so I could show you. you don't leave them flipped, you see when they start developing, and you flip the egg, whereever they are will move very very slowly it doesn't go immediately down to the smaller end. It moves quite slow, so I hold it there until it's out of the "saddle shaped" area and in the spot where it's suppose to be. I don't let it go to the bottom of the shell. LOL just in the clear spot where's it's suppose to be.. i can show you an egg that I have flipped so you can see how its developing. maybe i can explain better then.
