Call Ducks Finally Hatched

Still here! I was in school. I'm planning on hand turning the eggs since its my first hatch and I want to learn what its like. I'm running to TSC today or tomorrow to grab an Incubator so I can run it for 24 hours before i set the eggs. Since they are shipped should I let them settle and then candle and then set? Or candle and throw out the bad eggs and then let them settle and then set?

First of all your not going to have any bad ones unless they are totally Squooshed, meaning the shell is completely cracked and the yolk is ALL over the place. LOL

Hummmm.... I've always read that no matter what you're supposed to let shipped eggs settle or something. I'll follow the expert's advice though...! And so the whole three times a day turning is a no? Only once a day?
I will let lacrystol take over now..... I believe putting them in the cartons is a type of settling... Well I mean instead of a full 180 or a 360 turn you just do the little move over in the egg carton. More than once a day though....

Quote: I guess I should be clearer, lol... Mark all eggs with a different number, then candle all and make notes on quality of air cell, like note if it's jiggly, attached or loose, then set all of them and see what happens. If any are cracked, you might want to toss those, but some peafowl people have used Elmers glue or wax to seal the cracks and set them.

I did a search, but most of the posts apply to adults, so I want opinions from you guys please. My last little duckling "Chibs" was the one that pipped just below the air sac, but was able to make it out on his own. He sat for quite a few hours with his beak sticking out the hole. The other duckling kept pecking at his beak. I was praying that it didn't bother it, but when I moved him to the brooder, I could see a "scuff" mark, that I assumed would heal or wouldn't cause any issue. Well today I saw him take a drink, and a pinpoint sized bead of water came up thru the top of his bill. So I guess where they pecked at the bill, they actually made a little hole. Since he's only a day old, will this seal up on its own as his beak hardens, or is it always going to be there? Can I "glue" it with anything? Or put some antibiotics on it or just leave it alone?
He appears to be eating and drinking fine. (and I say "he" although I don't know its sex yet. I just don't like "it" haha)

I think he'll be fine, when they first hatch there beaks are still very soft and can easily be injured. You can always do what I did to mine. LOL I super glued my calls bottom beak back together when it was completely cracked in three spots..

BUT with him being so young, I would not recommend it.. Sorry, I take back my comment on the super glue. He's way to young, the fumes would not be good

And so no settling? First time hatch, sorry for so many questions.

Quote: I'm no expert when it comes to shipped eggs, but the gal that sent me pea eggs suggested I should let them rest fat end up for 24-48 hours, which I did, and five of six developed, but only four hatched. All six of mine had very jiggly air cells.

Hand turning is good, set the goal at 3 times per day and it doesn't have to be every 8 hours, just leave 4 hours in between each turn. My time was 8:30 am 6:30pm and then again at Midnight..
