She likes kisses! Much smaller than broad-breasted. They say hens average 14 pounds, Toms around 23 pounds. My SIL had a broad-breasted Tom that was easily 40+ pounds!

Yay that she likes kisses. 40 lbs is huge. even 14 is big compared to so many birds but that's their genes that determine their size, etc and selective breeding I think. I just think birds of all types are so wonderful because of their diversity and physically capable functions.

Sorry to take your thread off on a turkey tangent @Lacrystol , I hope you don't mind. Thought you might like to see this little one now anyway... Meet Gemma (or maybe Jimmy, if she turns out to be a "he" lol) 11 days old! She is so sweet and docile. Gotta be a girl! lol

that is a good looking Turkey! I got mine from a feed store. I think they breed them to grow too fast. That makes them more economical to eat. I just wanted a turkey to keep. It was so sad. Never got another after that. The Tom turkeys are so cool.

is that because the ducks dirty their water because they sit in it all the time and use it to assist in their eating?  like i've seen my friend's gobble food and then switch to water, drop food into the water and back to the food repeating the process many times causing the water to be dirty.  not to mention the silly little things like floating in it after playing in mud.

I have seen my ducks get a mouthful of dirt and drop it in the pool.

They love that chicken! Follow it everywhere. I had to move them, they are bigger than the new one, and were picking on her. The brutes lol

My Perdy's second clutch go into lockdown on Saturday morning and are due to hatch on April 7th! It's night 20 tonight and it appears two have internally pipped or are very close to internally pipping and two have air cells that are prepared for pipping! I cannot believe the time has come again already! Are my babies coming early?!

I think most of the feed stores only carry broad-breasted turkeys. They are "made" for butchering, so yes, I think they grow too fast. They usually die (if they aren't butchered first) because they get to big to hold themselves up. This one is a heritage breed, Slate turkey, so it will be slower growing, smaller overall, and I believe they can live 8-10 years. (Don't quote me on that, but I believe that's about right) Heritage breeds can reproduce naturally, unlike the broad-breasted ones. I'm not knocking broad-breasted. They are lovely too, and make great eating!
