Call Ducks Finally Hatched

i am haveing the same problem right were the leg begins on the skin its swelled up on spunky i gave vitamins and have ordered brewers yeast for it i thought it was a naicin defciency. either way he just started limping on it before he wouldnt even move i have been letting him swim and that put down the swelling some, idk if it is an injury there is no way for him to get injured is the thing.

I think maybe a slipped tendon but I still cant feel the darned thing. I thought it was just splay leg, but she doesn't bend it right. I treated with a band aid for splay leg and that pulled it in under her body some, and she is trying to use it now. But I'm exercising it every evening too. Its getting better each day. She still eats like a pig so I think she will survive, even if she never gets full use of it. 10 days old now.

So what are your ideas?

If it's not swelled then make him a Jumpy chair. LOL that's what I had done with one of my OTHER Cochins and it worked out PERFECTLY. Omg, with in 24 hours he was up walking on the leg and each day it just got stronger and stronger. Today you cant even tell if he had an issue. Yes, I had TWO cochins with leg issues. GRRR, This guy in the jumpy chair was AWESOME because he was a Frizzled cochin and turned out GORGEOUs and I'm not a huge fan of frizzled. Of course I had to get rid of him because I already had a hen that was Frizzled and I didn't want to risk breeding them together and have featherless babies.. YEK,, it's bad enough they have there feathers going ever which way but to have a BALD baby. OMG, I would be afraid to touch them.. LOL

OK slipped tendon once the joint swells, doesn't matter how many baths or swimming lessons you give him,
WAIT I THOUGHT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT A COCHIN??? how is the Cochin getting swimming lessons??? OMG, I"M SOO CONFUSED.

regardless: it's not going to go down, it's pretty much permanent damage. You can make adjustments so that he is able to use the leg but the swelling will always be there.

So if the swelling is going down, you can count slipped tendon out of the pic. Best to keep him off the leg for a while which a bouncy chair would come in handy for that. Some will say it's genetic but from what I have read, if the swelling is in both legs it's genetic, if it's one leg it's not.

I know this is true because if you recall I had a duck with slipped tendon and her parents produced more and the second batch of babies did not show any signs of it but looked EXACTLY like my slipped tendon duck..

its a 11 day old mallard lol sorry i wasent clear on that

LOL OK, well check his joint right where it's suppose to bend, like the knee cap, send me a pic, I'll tell you..

Whew, at least it's not a cochin, I was going to say, HOW the heck did you teach your cochin to swim, YOUR AMAZING... LOL

I was thinking you had one. LOL  OK then take her off the turner if you have her on one and lay her, wait we are calling it a him, Lay him down with the larger end slightly higher then the smaller end.  This should help.  But if by chance, it's and UPSIDE DOWNER, WOOOO HOOOO MY FAVORITE, let me know..  will get him out..

Have the following ready: Tweezers, q-tips, warm water,  camera and steady steady hands.  Have you ever helped a baby before?  If not, COOOL LET THE FUN BEGIN...

This will be my fourth hatch this year, I've helped MANY babies! Lol, I'd like to say I've become quite a pro at it actually (; In my last hatch I had two yellow babies that didn't make it, I was unaware that they were breech. I think I've finally learned when it's a beak trying to internally pip or a bum (; I want to be prepared this time for the possibility of a breech baby with a high chance of me being able to help it hatch, so I can have a happy and healthy little one!

The cochin is mine! Not buff goose guy's lol. The joint is not swollen. Will try to get a pic for you. I did see some chairs in my research, so maybe I'll try it since it worked for you. She's getting better each day though. I have another frizzled one that was born at the same time, this one is slower feathering in, but might end up frizzled too. Ugh.
Thanks! Will keep you posted.

I am glad the little diet soda birdie is getting better.
