Calling all APA and/or ABA breeders!

This is a super casual curiosity question, didn't feel worthy of a new thread so hopefully its ok here.

If you are getting into breeding for the first time and want to breed to standard, how many birds do you start out with? Do you get just one breeding pair and go from there, multiple pairs, or something like several hens and one cock/cockerel? Do you only purchase from one breeder, or do you bring in birds from multiple lines/breeders?
Space rules. Of course with bantams you can get away with having a larger breeding flock, but if you're a true backyard, like me, even with bantams you start with a small flock and see what develops. I don't think I'm planning on showing anytime in the near future, but I feel it's important at least to produce birds to the standard and not some disasters I just brought in a trio of bantam cochins this year and have a small flock going

If you don't mind me asking, how many birds do you keep?

This is my first year with chickens (just backyard layer hens), so I'm not ready to take the plunge into breeding. But I am really curious about it. I have a decently large yard but its still very much suburban. I don't think I could manage a standard sized rooster, but a small bantam breed might be a fun project in the future. If nothing else its fun to daydream :)

I have 5 bantams and 6 standard hens. I have an enclosed run that grows by about 40 square feet per year. This year I created a split run for my bantam project. I have a small house and a larger run for the big girls, and a smaller run for the bantams. I busted into the garage to create their indoor space. I'm really in trouble since I have a three-car garage. It could be all chickens in there next year.
I too have a good size property and neighbors with chickens, but I am suburban as well.
