I personally don't cook, but I've heard mixed reviews on each type, coil vs flat top ones, so I think it may depend on style of cooking.
I have some friends parents who cook "normal" types of what I usually call "American" food and they absolutely love the flat top glass stoves. My mom's sisters, heard all the great news and when they redid their kitchen, they got a glass one too and replaced it out after a few months because they couldn't get it "red hot" to do stir fry and the "Asian" cooking they got accustomed to, and they scratched the top with some of the bigger cookware they have. They would have loved a gas stove but it was not an option where they lived.
