My dh says to oil it and to not do the steel wool unless it's really bad. He claims you can just oil and oil and oil it to clean it up, and keep it oiled, but if it's VERY bad, then to resort to removing the finish with steel wool and re-blue-ing it.
He wants to know if the bore is rusted, too... and is it a single shot or a repeater.
Oh lord, I think he's gettin' in his truck and headin' to your house.
HA!! PICTURES, please!!!
He says to try to use Break-Free CLP first. It's a cleaner/lubricant/preservative. Runs about $7. He gets it at the local gun store, but he thinks you can get it at WalMart. Don't use WD-40. He says this CLP will stop the rust. Try this over and over, and see how much rust you can get off.
He wants to know what your actual concern is. Looks? The gun rusting away? Not being able to shoot it any more?
Same questions as Eggs4Sale. `Polish' has already been posted for exterior fixes. I'd only worry about the bore (assuming all mechanisms/surfaces aft of the firing pin are clean). Bore brush on cleaning rod, with bore paste run straight in and out will remove rust from grooves (twisting runs will then get any resistant crud off the lands), follow this up by running patches until they come back clean.
Wouldn't be, by chance, an old Nylon 66? Always on the look out for fellow old-time `syntheticists'
i agree do not use steel wool unless it horrible, please post pics, but i would take it to a gun smith before i put steel wool to it,
have you tried rem oil? not cheapo gun oil, and i would wipe down several time with nitro bore solvant first then put a heavy coat of rem oil, was it a cheap gun?
if so the factory blueing always sucks on them esp, savage rifles, did they store it in a vehicle? how long did they have it?
You have a couple of options...but be forewarned, the rust may leaving some pitting on the barrel once it is removed.
1. fine steel wool and gun oil;
2. remove the barrel and soak the rusted portion of the barrel in diesel. Diesel has the oil in it of course but also is capable of eating through the rust; or
3. sand down and re-blue the barrel
Those are the only things I know to do...you can also pick up another barrel relatively inexpensively. Check out Midway online I think they carry rem 22 barrels
Sorry , no pics...hubby took the camera with him to Vegas and now he can't figure out where he unpacked it . I will say that it is bad enough that after an hour of using steel wool in a 2" section ...I can still feel pock marks . Lucky for me there seems to be no rust on the inside . It's a Remington model 597 , semi-automatic . Like I said...a cheapie gun , but my only .22 . I think I paid $149 for the gun and scope brand new on sale 7 years ago . The diesel idea sounds promising....we do have alot of it around for the tractor...so I might try that and more elbow grease . The problem I'm faced with now is the finish on it . It doesn't have the normal "blue " finish . It almost looks like a nice black spray paint job , and I would think that if I hadn't bought it brand new from the store . Guess I'll have to steal my hubbys Henry until I can get mine back in working order . Sad thing is I remembered that she has my Remington .270 rifle also ....at least I know this one is in the house , although after what happened to my .22 , I need to get this one back ! She took the .270 to show to her boss because I'm looking to sell it . Bought it for $325 and found out that it's worth $500 + . Anyone need a .270 ? Any more info would be great....when I find the camera , I'll post pics . Thanks !
