Calling All New Brinsea Owners!!! January Hatch-a-long...

Sonew - my Brinsea Eco's glass thermometer has held steady at 100F since the initial adjustment. When I open and close the bator it takes literally minutes to be right back there. I have a digital therm./hygrom.(the kind with the probe on a wire) in there and it consistently runs several degrees lower. And, although I have water at about half full in both trough's the humidity has been in the low 30's. Soooo, I bought yet another digital therm/hygrom (the sort used in humidors), and that thermometer reads much closer to the Brinsea. The humidity is also higher - low 40's. I've decided to just trust the Brinsea on the temps since 7 of 12 of the chicks seem to be growing well on day 10 (three were clear, two early quitters). I only recently purchased the Brinsea, and this is my first hatch.
Here's a link for you for the C to F thing:

Bordergurl, where abouts you from? Going by the celsius I'd say somewhere in Canada.

I'm from Southern Ontario. My flock keeps increasing as I seem to be the person who rehomes hens. Just got a nice 10 month old barred hen yesterday. Couldn't figure out why she wouldn't go up to the high roost- her wings are clipped!

Sooooo, who wants day olds in Southern Ontario- I'm dying to try out my incubator!!!!!!

Well, my preliminary review of the Ova Easy 190...

pros- Temperature and Humdity DON'T move! They stay right where you set them, and recover within moments of closing the door again. Really amazing.

cons- You will fill this one up too! I did some early candling tonight, and I was thrilled to pull about 12 clear eggs. Of course, I put 15 more in.... I'm gonna be in sooo much trouble in a couple of weeks.

I have some seramas that I started out in the old incubator that will were transferred last week. They should be hatching on Wednesday. I'll prepare them for hatching tomorrow.

If you have no self control, this is not the incubator for you! Of course, you'd have to be lacking some self control to buy this thing in the first place. Case in point-- ME!

Your temp spiked? That is NOT supposed to happen with these incubators. What model do you have, how high did it go, where was your temp set and what did you do?

It went to 103, it as set at 99.58, the digital I had inside read 105 and I sure hope its wrong or poor little ones! I adjusted down the temp, its been running at 99.5 since. I really really packed in my eggs not sure if that cause a problem. They were set on Jan 7th. When I get home from work, we will see what I find way too early to candle for damages. So i'm just crossing my fingers. Oh its the Oct 20 Eco (w/ 32 eggs)....

Just an FYI. A few days ago I had the temp spike to about 101.5 (incubator's thermometer) after adding an entire layer of silkie eggs on top of the 35 silkie eggs I already had in there. I ended up turning the temp down a bit. Yesterday when I went to candle the eggs, I noticed that the bottom eggs felt cool to the touch. Not sure if the warm air was able to reach the lower eggs well enough. Hope everything will turn out okay, but I moved the top layer of eggs to another incubator just in case.

Thanks Karen and everyone else -I am buying another digital reader today I cant take staring at two different temps-especially when one is sooo much lower than the other. I trust the read out of temp of the BRinsea its the humidity Im worried about as it is dry as a bone here!

The temp in my Brinsea is very steady. Right now I am running it empty to make sure it is regulating good.
I noticed with one channel filled with water it was reading at 31% humidity. I filled the other channel and got to 40% humidity. I think this is because you really need more moist surface area versus more water to get the humidity up.

My GQC Hydrometer showed 77% when I did the calibration salt test suggested.
So I am thinking I need to keep both channels full or fill one and place either a half sponge or whole sponge to create more wet surface to keep my humidity in the range of 40 to 45% range for days 1- 17, and possibly use 2 sponges for days 18-21 to increase to the 60% - 65% range.

Once I put the eggs in will this raise the humidity some?
This is my first time using a Brinsea so, what is your feedback on getting good humidity for the incubation?

Sorry if I am reapeting something already said, but for those of u that want to put water in the incubator without opening it, I have found a solution.

1.) Take 2 regular plastic straws and connect them together.
2.) Go to walmart and get a Turkey Baster set, or just any syringe.
3.) Put the straws through the top vent.

4.) (With Turner) Wait for the turner to place the bator at an angle. (Without Turner) tip the bator at an angle.
5.) Fill syringe with desired amount of water.
6.) Put syringe needle in straw, and slowly push water through the straws. Because the bator is at an angle, the water will run into the wells below.

Hopes this works for u like it has for me! Happy Hatchin'
