Calling All Old Cast Iron Lovers.......

Love, love, love my cast iron skillet!!! I use it almost everyday. I've got a blog where I have a lot of step by step recipes, so I take pictures so the recipes are easier to follow. My iron skillets a big part of the blog.

Why does it feel tacky? I've used Crisco and sometimes they DO feel tacky until I warm the pans back up. Bacon fats seems to do the trick tho!

I never have figured out why only that with anything other than lard or bacon fat they will get gummy.

DH loves cast iron....we have a friend who's grandmother would feed the hogs out of her new cast iron skillets for a few days to make them smooth

Thank you all!

I have carpal tunnel and have a hard time lifting them but since I have birds (no, not chickens, lol ) in the house, non-stick is out for good. If you overheat non-stick cookware you'll kill your birds because of the fumes it will let off.

Luckily I do have all my mother's old cast iron skillets (every size from 6" to 14") and a cool pan that makes cornbread sticks that come out looking like little ears of corn. I'm thinking of just hanging that one on the wall though since I have no practical use for it. The skillets were coated on the outside with years of crud

and though my friends say they're supposed to be that way, I put them in a wood fire outside and burned it off. It made them noticeably lighter!

Cast Iron isnt allowed in our house after DW when our second year of marrage she knocked me out with a cast iron skillet. The biggest one we had mind you. When I woke up the skillet was cracked.

Felt like I was in a three stooges movie

That's one hard head you got! But I see DW found out how to "get the message through" it.

We have several cast iron pieces. Some are old and inheirted and some are newer.I have a wood cook stove from my dads side of the family, plus a 3 legged large skillet,I'm not sure what is is other than for using over a fire.I have a 15 gallon stew pot that we use.I have a new gypsy pot my dad bought for my birthday and an old one I got at a sale.I've got at least 14 small to large skillets.I have 2 what we call fish cooker pots.I've got 2 ear corn corn bread pans plus a newer fish/perch shaped one.I've got 1 dutchoven.I've got something thats has 6 cups maybe a muffin pan.I've also got a shoe makers stand and a clothes iron.My husband suprised me with a old bell that sits on top of a post.We use most of the skillets regularly and the one of the cornbread pans.Oh,I just remembered the box I brought at a yard sale that has 6 small to large skillets with the handles broke off.I think I paid $5 for all of them.I figured to use them for cornbread or camping but haven't needed them yet.I really love my cast iron stuff. It has taken my awhile to learn how to keep them in working shape.I still have not been able to get my fish shaped one working well.It still sticks.Oh well I'll surely figure it out.I think my skillets are something I would never be able to do without.I'm glad to see so many people know how valuable this old things are.Not just the money worth but the history, too.I need to post some pics and maybe learn more about what I have.
