Calling all Penedesencas Owners/Breeders

16 out of 22 hatched. Thanks again Guy.
You're more than welcome.

don't discount your incubating skills though. Dark eggs can be a challenge to hatch
I agree. Most people I've sent eggs to have had better success lately than I have. I'm not setting again till I get my cabinet put back together.

I just put them in the bator (with no water at all) in the auto turner for 19 days. Took out the turner on day 19. Added about 3/4 quart of water in channels. Put a dish with medicated chick starter and a dish of water in. I did not open the lid until today
You put food and water in the incubator?
I've never thought of that. Not sure it would work with my setup.

I would guess that the first 19 days the humidity averaged 22-24% humidity
Good to know.

www.livestockconservancy.org

they are doing a breed census on numerous breeds trying to get a accurate count as possible .
I am hoping that by having enough people submit there numbers they will list them on there website.
This would be a good step in getting more people into them.

I am biased but lets make no mistake if you need a heat hardy alert chicken they have no equal.
Dark brown eggs are a plus
I've done it but I'm only listing the number of birds that are my primary breeders. Backups and birds with flaws are left off for now. I'm also currently not having my info public.
Maybe next year.

When I talked to them about 3 years ago, they told me their only interest and focus was on breeds that were here at the turn of the last century. Since Penedesenca are on their list, I assume that focus has broadened.

I kind of wish they also broke it down by a sub category of variety.
For instance, black Minorca are fairly common but white and buff are almost non-existent.
Same goes for black Penes. Not as dramatic of a contrast as with Minorcas but I think wheaten, crele and partridge are more common.

I did put food and water in the bator on day 19 when I took out the auto turner. I have had hatches span 3 days or more. My wife always nags about taking out the chicks because she thinks they are hungry and thirsty. I will put food and water in the bator from now on. It was a little more messy but I clean it after every hatch anyway.

Yes broken down are good but wheaten are tough to find even good partridge are hard and crele rare to

At least the egg varieties have been carried by hatcheries in the past.
Yes partridge and wheaten I've seen listed though I think gabbard farms website is down . Sand hill and our fly babies list blacks . I got blacks from sand hill originally and the rosters where way off hens ok. I have not seen crele though listed anywhere. I get the most calls for crele and black. I'm most concerned with wheaten though white empordanesa are in the most trouble of the family

Help? I hatched 5 black copper marans eggs. This guy is 4 weeks old. Is this "carnation" comb? Does that imply some penedesenca genetics or is that too simple? His crown has inspired me to possibly get some Penedesencas in the future.

Thanks!
Looks like a nice carnation comb to me. Side sprigs are a flaw in Marans.

I renewed the website for 2 years . I had to pass on the 70.00 high visibility part though as it already was 270.00 for two years and i have a lot going on so couldn't swing it. the site should still pop up close to the front though just based on the number of penedesenca hits that search

If we can get more blood from Spain and even more varieties of Emps, we'll have to figure out a way to do a big splash promotion.

Someone wants to trade eggs with me but his came from Sandhill.
I know someone that got BP birds from SH and some had 5 toes.
