Can anyone help me with egg ID? I recently got some Barnevelder, Welsummers, and Marans.

Here are some egg pictures.

Any idea whose is whose? (light eggs are from Sussex and Wyandotte hens).

Based on the pic, and keep in mind that pics can be deceiving, I'd say you have a Barnie egg on top and the remaining four are Welsummer eggs. The Barnie eggs are typically more roundish and the Welsummer eggs often have more of the torpedo or teardrop shape to them.

All the eggs are light for the breed but the one darkest egg with the spot might turn out to be a nice dark egg. You mentioned you "recently" got them so I'm guessing they were POL pullets when you got them? Where did you get them from? Do you know where they came from? Presuming only from the pics of both the birds and eggs, I am guessing that these are hatchery birds? I certainly do not wish to offend or belittle your birds but if you find you really like these breeds, you may want to look into getting some nice birds and/or eggs from a reputable breeder.

No offense taken whatsoever. I actually got these birds from a women who is working on breeding some heritage lines. She has an excess of 11 month old birds that she was not using to reproduce her lines. I offered to take her less genetically ideal birds since I am not breeding my hens. I just wanted an opportunity to see how I like the breeds and I recently got room to expand my flock.

I am not even sure all my hens are laying despite their age as I am only getting between 5 and 11 eggs per day from 20 hens. None appear to be Marans standard eggs. I get some of the darker spotted eggs and some of the lighter finely spotted eggs. Mostly I get creamy eggs from my Sussex and Wyandottes. I only know their eggs well because I've been getting them for 6 months or so. I do have a Sussex roo, but only one of my hens lacks the mossy back markings. If I ever hatch any of my own eggs, they would be from her.

I know that genetically these birds parents all came from heritage breeders originally, but again I offered to take those who were less than ideal rather than see them culled. If managing a bigger flock goes well and I enjoy these breeds, I hope to bring in higher quality stock in a year or two. This chicken business sure is addicting.

Egg identification:

My guess is top left - Wellie
Top row 2nd egg and Bottom row, 3rd and 4th egg - Barnie
No Marans eggs that I see.

I would agree with a previous poster Barnie eggs are usually almost round on both ends, but I think they are too light and no speckles which leads me to believe they are not Wellies. I could be wrong, but it's fun guessing.

Hi! colowyo0809! I wondered how your barnies were growing. Here is the one sibling I have left.

Still have some hope its a pullet as its now 2.5 months old with some comb. My cochins would have lots more at this age (they're easier to tell!)

I have 7 pullets and a roo. My roo and 3 pullets are from Kelly Cratty Lines and my other four pullets were purchased directly from Erhard Weihs. Very nice gentleman whose knowledge is amazing!

Some lacing is better then other, but they are only 20 weeks old and I hope they continue to improve.
