I'm not sure what your entire area looks like but would it be possible to put some chicken wire, hardware cloth or cattle panel across the top vs a roof?

Yes his border walls I made with half-inch hardware cloth.
I am not there right now but you might be able to see part of the border walls in the pictures above.
Anyways I just got finished talking to the mini and we're thinking about building two pieces of roof on hinges so we can just fold them back to open up the area for when we want to go in.

I'll take a video of what I'm just describing to see if I'm going to be able to figure out how to build what I'm describing too.
