Calling all sebastopol owners!!!

Vicky. You can have one of my sebbies any time you want... no waiting list needed.
My blue girl is out of PEEP! So of course you like her daughter

Yes I still have Saffron... My what a stud! he is the king around here!! I was thinking Id put Peep and Saffron together this year, and put blue girl with her daddy.
That will get me blue on both sides of the pedigree, but still have the good feather gene from Peeps side of the pedigree.
I could potentially put Peep back in with the blue boy for one clutch since I already know the quality I'd get. Its a shame their breeding season is so short!!!

My blue gander came from Holdereads. I was sent photos and knew exactly what I was getting before I bought him. I was well aware his feathering was not what it should be.... but I was more interested in his blue genes (eh heh) , and knew I would have to work on feathering for a few generations. That said. I am THRILLED with what this gander has produced.

As a show dog breeder, type and breed standard is VERY important to me. The colored Sebbies, need some work..... and its my PLEASURE to be able to work on this. I love them.

Frankly I've heard alot of complaints about them too but then theres just as many people who think they have the best waterfowl in the U.S.

The word "Show Quality" needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
People need to be savvy buyers and know what they are looking for.
First one has to know what the breed standard calls for
by researching a breed well before you start looking...this is a must.
Don't merely ask for opinions on forums...do you own homework.
Then try to find an experienced, well established breeder.
Ask for photos of the parents andsale birds if you are buying started youngsters or adult birds from out of state.
Ask for references of their past customers and if they act impatient about answering your questions don't buy from them.
"Show quality" is a usually a sales pitch in most cases and there's really no such thing as show quality babies.
Even if the parents are show birds that does not mean their offspring will be.
Resist the temptation to go for the bargain or buying off ebay or eggbid.
Generally speaking commercial hatcheries don't offer quality birds.
We all get excited and make dumb purchases but live and learn hey?

Edited to add:
I have a friend that breeds colored Sebs and has gotten very good results from the
birds she's purchased from Dave H.
I've seen pics of offspring shes gotten out of smooth-breasted Sebs from DH and they could easilly win on a national level.
Plus she's tiold me DH has been extremely helpful in answering her many questions
so it's hard to figure out why some people don't get the same results.
Who knows?!

Pretty much the bottom line is work with what you have.
Do selective breeding and cull, cull, cull!
Rarely can one buy the very best breeding stock from others.
Lets face it...we all keep the very best and sell (or eat) the rest.

Yes! If you get any Peep x Blue Gander goslings that you're willing to part with please let me know.
Can you post pics of your lavender gander?
Jenifer K. has colored ganders from DH and is very happy with whats shes getting as well. I can't wait to see these colored Sebs a few generations from now.
Glad to hear Saffron is doing well.
Post pics of him too!
I would love to see some recent ones.
Thanks!

Where can Seb owners get a current standard of perfection for Sebastopols both white and colored? I am disturbed to hear there has been problems with Holderreads. They have always been very reputable. As far as Sebs go, I have only bought adult ganders from them. They are big boys and I wonder if they are putting size (which can be impressive, but not necessarily correct) before standard! They are loves and have great temperaments.

Vicky the most recent photos are on my Flickr album.
This is Saffron - photos taken this morning ..

The smaller lavender male in this photo is an 07 hatch He is FOR SALE. He'd be a great addition for someone who wanted to get started with some colored birds. Hes not perfect, but I think hes only 1 generation away from being very nice!

This pic just shows some variety...
on left its blue gander (hissing at Saffron up at the top) then a pretty splash hen I hatched this year, then lav gander 08, lav gander 07, and on far right a white (not sure who it is)

Peachick, they are a very handsome bunch! I'm hoping Yuri blue goo will feather out more. He and Zeena's kids have shed or knocked off virtually all their long feathers! They have had goose wars with the new gander. I am curious how common this is. It snowed yesterday and here is a pic of Zoey in the center of her parents and her two bros ("the Beasey twins" Zen and Zucherro). The next is a pic of Yuri. His feathers are ALL over the yard, some pulled out by Zoey's father Zander! They seem finally to have made peace. At first the gang would not let Yuri play any reindeer games!

Colored Sebastopols are hybrids and not currently recognized by the APA.
White Sebatopols are an accepted APA breed and you will find their breed standard in the APA Standard of Perfection year books.

Some Sebastopols hold onto their long feathers longer than others.
Its not just wear and tear but can be a genetic trait I believe.
I have some that look good all winter and some that blow
their feathers alot sooner.
I'm wondering, is this typical of the colored hybirds to lose their long feather fast?
Kat, anybody?

Vicky, I dont think it has anything to do with the color. I think its more to do with age. The young ones groom eachother... hence fethers fall off .

look at the pile of feathers that fell off of her at the show we did last month. They were a tangled mess that she must have removed while she was there.
