Calling all veterans and family members. Allies too.

You know what's really cool are all the signs I still see hanging off bridges welcoming soldiers home. I like to see the names and more so, like to see them come home alive.

My dh has 21 years in with the Air Force, and Air Force Reserve. Currently deployed overseas. I'm so proud of him. Thank you to all who serve to keep our country free.

It's that time of year again. Veterans Day is Thursday, November 11. Veterans Day used to be know as Armistice Day (the end of WW I) and is often observed by a moment of silence at 11:00, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. I thope I don't have this wrong.

Please honor our vets and let us know if you're a vet or have vets in your family.

Thanks for the reminder, Dac!
I always call my dad and tell him Thank You for serving..

I served in Vietnam in '69 and the 7th of November is my personal day to reflect (the day in which I earned my purple heart) and continues through to the 11th. I am sometimes a little put out when people thank me on Memorial Day or greet me with "Happy Memorial Day". I know they mean well. Happy to be alive on that day but the 11th is the time to thank a vet.

My company always publishes the names of all the veterans that work for them in their newsletter. I served but the only action I ever saw was at the bars. There's a big difference between veterans that have seen action and those that haven't. I'm glad I didn't see any action. I have a lot of respect for those that did. I don't agree with our current war, but I do respect the guys that are over there. I respect their families too and may your loved ones be safe.

I served in the U.S. Navy from 1971-1992. I've served in the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard, USS Hoist ARS-40, YTB-801 Palatka, USS Dwight D Eisenhower CVN-69, USS Simon Lake AS-33, USS Mount Baker AE-34, USS Spruance DD-963, Fleet Training Center Mayport, Florida. Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity Charleston, S.C.
My father served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years, mostly on aircraft carriers. He served during WWll, Korea and Vietnam. I remember my dad returning from a Med cruise onboard the USS Intrepid CV-11. The ship tied up to the pier where my mom and I were waiting along with many others. When the crew was allowed to depart the ship, it wasnt 20 minutes later they had an emergency recall....the ship had to get underway to Cuba....to participate in the Cuban blockade and they were deployed for another 3 months. Known today as the Cuban Missile Crisis.

What does ARS, YTB,AE, AS and DD stand for? I figured out the CV and CVN. Obviously they are acronyms for the type of vessel. Gotta love the military and all their acronyms.

Another question too.

Is the Marines an actual branch of the Navy? Or are they completely independent and just hitch rides on Navy Vessels? Seeing as you were a career Navy man I figured you should know.
