Calling all veterans and family members. Allies too.

My dad was in Vietnam twice..
First as a Navy sea-bee (sp?)..
Then he went back in..( in the Army this time..), when my mother was pregnant with me.. to help support his family.
When i was a little girl i remember he showed me a lock of my new born hair that he brought over there with him for good luck and so he'd make it back to us..
But he was discharged early because my mother got cancer when i was just a baby.. so he had to come home and take care of us.
I'm very very proud of my father.

Like Dunkopf, I guess I consider war veterans to be our "true" veterans, although all who enlist know that it's always a possibility (having to fight to defend freedoms). My son plans on joining the Marines after he graduates this year. While it makes me nervous, I'm so proud of his decision...

What does ARS, YTB,AE, AS and DD stand for? I figured out the CV and CVN. Obviously they are acronyms for the type of vessel. Gotta love the military and all their acronyms.

Another question too.

Is the Marines an actual branch of the Navy? Or are they completely independent and just hitch rides on Navy Vessels? Seeing as you were a career Navy man I figured you should know.

ARS- Auxillary Rescue Salvage, YTB- Large yard tugboat, AE- Auxillary Ammunition, AS-Auxullary Submarine Tender, DD-Destroyer. There's a million acronyms in the Navy. Marines fall under the Department of the Navy...we called them "the Navy's sea going bellhops." LOL. They ran the brig aboard the Ike. There's other things they did aboard ship's that I cant mention. Times have changed over the years and I doubt if there's anymore Marines actually stationed aboard ship's at present.

There are 5 military services in the US: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard. The Marines (and at times the Coast Guard) fall under the command structure of the Dapartment of the Navy, but are a separate military service.

My husband was USMC 1971 - 1975.
Our oldest son was an Airborne Ranger 1990 - 2004.

Oh, the stories ..... the stories ..... hhmmmmm....

Thank you all for serving our country, so that we can all enjoy our freedom.
