Calling all West-River South Dakotans

Hello,

I realize there are various threads that mention South Dakotans seeking other poultry rearing South Dakotans, but with our state being so stretched out and distance being an issue, I thought it might be nice if we established a regionally based thread for "West River" and "East River" South Dakotans.

Outsiders may not understand, but the term is known by all South Dakotans, so I figure it should work to help divide up our BYC group and help us network!

So calling ALL West-River Birders!

Piedmont here!

Hopefully others will join you Wheeler Farms! I know the frustration of trying to find fellow SDakotans in our part of the state. I'm east river, and all I located on BYC were west river. Soooo I figured it was time we at least make a means for the members to meet up. Since we can't have lawful Swaps happening in the state, we may has well network some other way!

Rapid City here!

We're on the west side.

Why is it against the law?

I think it all started with the fear of Avian flu. The state vet started "circling the wagons" and stripping poultry breeders from being able to bring their animals into close proximity to other birds or to humans, etc. I know one of my friends who is a breeder in the state, is restricted from allowing others (customers) from coming onto her property. She is licensed to sell her birds and eggs, but she has to pay for the testing of EVERY bird. She learned how to do the blood extraction, so that cost is reduced, but still has to pay for an outside lab to do the lab work on each animal.

About the same time, they shut down the Swaps in the state. We can hook up and all that as breeders and such but with so many hoops to jump thru its made it so many are confused by the laws and regs to such a degree they are just keeping clear of the whole process.

I think its crazy we can't have Swaps in South Dakota. But we're able to go into neighboring states to their SWAPS and buy birds there and bring up back! No different to human safety in those states than in our state, but logic isn't want apparently is running the legislation.

From my reading we are able to sell directly but not thru a third party, without being licensed, but many think its the other way. That we can't sell at all without license. I wish the state would clarify it better so farmers and hobbyists would know for certain.

Its good to know about the laws as they are currently written. One relating to us is

If you are using the styrofoam incubator , use very little water, or none at all the first 18 days. My first attempt turned out way too wet and sticky. I had a LG with fan and turner. I filled the small ring and covered 2/3 with tinfoil. My next attempt is in a couple weeks,With quality Dominique eggs, from the best breeders in the country. Hopefully I do better this time. Good luck Cal Walsh (longtail bantams and Dominique's)
