calling all wild bird feeders!!

Pics
The pine siskin are still here. Had a flock of robins in the yard...finally. Have been optimistic given our warm temperatures that we were done with winter. A bluebird family has moved in to the bluebird house. I washed all of the hummingbird feeders and put them out in anticipation of the migration back to the north. I have seen some flocks of birds on the move this week in their v formation. The grackle can go anywhere but here... I even saw them in Costa Rica where by a different name they are still a pest.

The gold finches came back this morning. I did not give in and give them the sunflower nuts they wanted. YET..

I bought 20 pounds of them yesterday along with safflower seeds, but I did not put them out yet.

I think they decided I was not going to give them the good stuff and settled for the Nigel thistle seeds.

Only about half the flock was here, but I am now going to hold out for them all to come back.

Have been reading, and enjoying everyone's shots. Just not much out of the ordinary 'Nightmare of Tippi Hedron' to report from these parts. One welcome sight? Eastern BB's showed up this past week: And, in what is either commentary on the inordinate number of snags I leave standing here, in the woods, deserving what I get, or some outstanding environmental conditions for the Red Headed Woodpecker breeding last spring, for the first time in over 20 years we are overrun by this territorial terror. Have at least five males that have staked out various White Oak & Shag Bark Hickory Snags. They tag team the Pileated, individually harass Red Belly, Flicker and Hairy. They never bother with the puny Downy. Has little to do with nesting places or forage (RHWP chase the others from the suet cakes but never so much as land on a tree with a suet cake, much less eat from one). Am guessing that, owing to the mild winter, the Wood Roach populations under the dead bark of those snags is pretty robust. Anyway, I now know where several potential nesting locations are and, after the leaves come in I'll know where to hunt for better shots.

The Hummers are back!

Friday morning DH & I were sitting on the porch having our coffee and I mentioned it was about time to get the hummingbird feeder cleaned and filled. About an hour later, there was one stopping by and they've been back every day since.

Anyone else seeing them yet?

I have the normal birds still no spring birds.

Cardinals, Gold Finches, Nut hatches and so on.

I have a Junco eating right now. He should go away! NOW. his time is past. LEAVE LEAVE LEAVE!!!

I did have a chipping sparrow the other day with the finches. I don't think they migrate I just do not see them in the winter. Maybe they lose their cap or something, I have no idea..

BTW I love the bluebird picture! Great shot!

We see them during the summer but never close up.

All woodpecker populations are up here as a result of Hurricane Sandy and all the damaged and down trees. Cardinal wars are on full force as the males are staking out territories.

"Cardinal wars"...that's a good way of describing how they act, lol. Fierce, beautiful birds!
