calling all wild bird feeders!!

Pics
I get red belied woodpeckers at the feeders al the time. I had one their yesterday but he was picking peanuts out of the tray. They are a little more nervous and flighty than the hairy and downy woodpeckers are. I like watching them though they are so pretty although it is hard to see the red bely on most of them.

Feeder is going into overdrive today. Lots of house finches, pine siskins, cardinals nut hatches and other little tweety birds....

I saw my first butterfly of the season today. It was a beautiful Tiger Swallowtail that was flying around drinking nectar from the Yoshino Cherries that are in full bloom.

Dang And I was happy I saw my first Robin of the year.

We had a pair out our bedroom window.

I have a friend that lives in Northfield. We worked together at Lockheed in Atlanta '69-'71. He went back home to Minnesota when we got laid off and met a Minnesota girl and stayed. He said that he could never get her to leave Minnesota. He flew down here in March one year and we were sitting out back grilling and he was amazed. He asked if everything stayed green all winter and I said pretty much.

I was going to say that we sent the robins on their way north a couple of weeks ago and they would arrive at any time! We have bees checking on the fragrantly blooming orange tree and I saw several yellow butterflies. The crows were actively chasing the hawks and the resident black vultures were floating around. It was an excellent Spring day here.

Robins are pretty much a fixture all winter long here. Didn't use to be that way. Saw the pileated woodpecker this morning - the first time in a while.

No robin sightings here yet. The goldfinches are finally changing colors and the Cardinals are becoming territorial. One grackle made an appearance yesterday. Saw a half dozen Canada geese pass over and a pair of nervous Nellie Wood Ducks scattered for cover while I was out for a walk near a local pond. Silly ducks, I wouldn't have known they were there if it hadn't been for the fuss they made when flying away.

The migratory Robins have arrived. Over 2 weeks late, but I have never seen such large flocks of them. The goldfinches are finally turning yellow and waterfowl are returning in large numbers. I saw the biggest flock of Wood Ducks I have ever seen at a local pond. Over 30 of them. I didn't even notice them at first hiding there in the old pond weeds but they took off in a fuss when I walked by. I have also seen pairs of Canada geese, black ducks, mallards and buffleheads. A few blackbirds have made an appearance, along with some cowbirds unfortunately.
